DEER LICK
Any deer hunters out there got a good recipe for a deer lick? Since the deer have almost finished eating my garden up I need to give 'em a good salt lick to keep them around until season comes in.

50# bag mineral salt ,dig a shallow hole in the spot of your choice ,pour out salt , mix with the soil from the hole , smooth over . The rain and moisture from the soil will draw the salt and minerals down causing the deer to have to paw deeper to get the salt . Also more of a natural lick.
Cheapest way I know to go .

RICE BRAN!YOU WON'T GO WRONG!
[/quote]
I discovered rice bran last year and you are absolutely right, they'll eat it before eating corn!! I had been pouring corn or sweet feed out on the ground in front of my game cam,but rain or heavy dew would cause it to mold and mildew before they could eat it all. I built a covered feed trough to keep the feed dry but they were scared of it. Heard about rice bran from some cajuns that hunt near us and tried it, now they are eating out of the trough!

Re: DEER LICK
Rice bran is good. Hogs don't seem to go after it as bad. Initially I like to use c'mere deer along with the rice bran. Find an old stump or rotten log you can bust up and pour the stuff in it. They will destroy whatever you put it on. Only trouble I have is the critters go nocturnal at feeding sites once you start shooting or when they bust you a few times.

Re: DEER LICK
I don't hunt over bait, but would if it was legal in Alabama. I have several places to hunt so I feed until the rut on my land and only hunt it in January. I check my game cams all during the season to see if I have any shooter bucks, if not I don't even hunt here, I let 'em grow up. If I want meat, I shoot does, if I shoot a buck it will be worth bragging about!

trophy rock. natural mined minerals from utah. none of the chemical additives that are in commercial blocks and works 3x as good. available at most co-ops or TSC stores.

Re: DEER LICK
Mix in some grape KoolAde with your bag salt and mix it into the ground like usa directed. They seem to like the flavor and the little bit of sugar. They mostly hit my salt licks in spring and summer when their metabolisms are switching over from winter browse to green, leafy stuff.

A good way for us to all "calibrate" the turbidity numbers will be for people to report their general impression of visibility pretty often (including time of day) at the station. Which brings up...
