Are you an Alabama resident? If so, just go down to your local sheriff's office grab an application. Take it home fill it out and get your references to sign it then take it back and pay a fee(mine was $35 but it depends on the county I think) and presto you have a CC license.
Just saw that VA resident is not honored by Alabama. Florida non resident is, and it is very easy to obtain. I have one and it covers a couple of states that my LA resident didn't. Have a MS resident now and believe it covers a couple more than the FL non resident.
An Alabama pistol permit is not valid in Virginia. Also, I assume you are driving to Virginia and in that case South Carolina does not honor Alabama CCL's either. You will need to secure the weapon when traveling through states that do not honor Alabama CCL's in a manner deemed suitable by that state. Generally, the weapon will need to be unloaded and locked out of the drivers reach and the ammo will have to be in a different yet secure area as well. Best to check the states requirements though.
Looking at the Virginia laws on CCL's it looks as if you have to show proof of completing a firearms training course but it does say a hunter education/safety course is acceptable from another state which I assume you have taken. I would suggest calling the Sheriff's office (I think the permits are actually issued by the clerk of the circuit court) in the county you are planning to visit in Virginia and see what you might be able to work out. If you are planning to spend a significant amount of time in Virginia and have a justifiable reason for needing a CCL the local authority will probably be willing to work with you on a temporary permit.
Good Luck!
Utah permit is honored(reciprocal) by Alabama....although I did read somewhere... if it wasn't my resident state, it wasn't....I still have it when I come there, most of the time I am in Florida anyway that is reciprocal with Ohio....I wish they would allow all to be good for the whole nation with extensive back ground check, like I went through for my out of state Utah permit
The only problem with that is some states require the completion of a course that involves both classroom and field training. As for background checks, I think every state requires one before issuing a CCL. However, the background checks are not going to stop someone from carrying a firearm. If a criminal wants to carry a firearm he/she is not going to care if it is legal or not.
In my opinion, everyone should be required to complete a firearm safety course with classroom training on concealed carry. Don't get me wrong I hate government getting in my way but the problem is some people get permits who have no business carrying a firearm. Some type of "training" (better yet education) on the laws, weapon safety, and more importantly how and when to exercise lethal force safely and effectively should be required before a permit is issued.
If you reside in Mobile County, the Sherriff’s pistol permit info with a link to the application form is:
Pistol Permit » Mobile County Sheriff's Office
If you reside in Baldwin County, the Sherriff’s pistol permit info posted on their website is:
HOW DO I GET A PISTOL PERMIT?
First time pistol permit holders should complete a pistol permit application, and bring to an office in Bay Minette, Fairhope, or Foley for processing. The permits cost is $30 and for senior citizens age 65 or over, the cost is $20. Cash, check, money order, or cashier's checks are accepted.
For renewal of existing permit holders, you can come by one of the above mentioned offices or mail your check, money order, cashier's check, for renewal to the following address, along with your expired permit. Permits are to be renewed annually:
Baldwin County Sheriff's Office

ours is a 12hr course, 10 class room and 2hr shooting...I think in Florida if you have a hunting license you can get a permit....doesn't seem the same to me, but who am I to question it....and learned a lot in the classroom too!!!
and hope and Pray I never need to use it either....but the way the country is getting ....well I pray I never need to
as much as i agree on the training class my experience in the required course in florida for a concealed permit was a joke. Go to the gun show and pay 50 dollars . Sit in a room that by fire safety would prob have a max cap of 30 ,squeeze in 75 people. Next an instructor uses a rubber handgun to tell you some rules, laws, and tips as most people pay zero attention. Hours later here is a test it has 20 questions and the answers are written on the board so if your too stupid to look up and see that it has 1 thru 20 listed with the a,b,c,or d answer than you dont deserve a permit lol. Next follow me a block down the street where we will single file a line and one at a time you will not load not cock not anything but be handed a loaded revolver and pull the trigger one time down range. CONGRATS you have just earned your state required cert to get a concealed permit.
That's what I took in Louisiana. Was taught by a retired FBI agent and the class was very good. Learned a lot.Quote:

It is my understanding that Alabama does not issue non-resident permits.
http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/alabama.pdf
As an alternative, you may be able to get a non-resident CCP in some other state that recognizes Alabama.
Alabama doesn't have a Non-Resident permit, only Resident.
Go to local Sheriffs Office, fill out form, pass background check, pay fee of $20-50. depending on Sheriff/County and typically walk out with CCW in 15-30 minutes.
USA, as of Aug 1st you can hold ANY State's CCW and Alabama will honor it, even if that State doesn't honor Alabama's.
On May 22nd the Alabama Legislature passed and Governor Bentley signed SB 286 aka the Omnibus Gun Reform/Rights Law.
It goes into effect on August 1st.
These are some great changes for Open Carry & Concealed Carry, these rewrites and clarifications of the old law are all positive.
NRA-ILA | Alabama Governor Signs Omnibus Firearms Reform Bill into Law
This is another summary of the new law.Quote:
Senate Bill 286 will protect and restore your Right to Keep and Bear Arms in Alabama by reforming the state gun laws in the following ways:
- Allows those who possess a valid Alabama pistol permit to keep firearms stored in their vehicle while at work, as well as allowing those who possess a valid Alabama hunting license to store an unloaded rifle or shotgun used in their vehicle while at work.
- Allows transportation of a handgun in a vehicle without an Alabama pistol permit as long as the handgun is unloaded, locked in a container and out of reach of the driver or passenger.
- Shifts the current “May Issue” concealed carry permit system to a “Shall Issue” permit system and requires that a sheriff must issue or deny the carry permit within thirty days. Should someone be denied a permit, a written denial must be provided and that applicant would have an opportunity to appeal the denial.
- A permit to carry a concealed pistol shall be good for one to five years (to be decided by the applicant seeking the carry permit).
- Requires sheriffs to use the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) to conduct a background check on concealed pistol permit applicants.
- Allows for all other valid state-issued permits to carry a concealed firearm to be recognized in Alabama.
- Strengthens Alabama’s firearms preemption statute by reserving for the state legislature complete control over regulation and policy relating to firearms, ammunition and firearm accessories in order to ensure that such regulation is applied uniformly throughout the state.
- Extends the current Castle Doctrine to include places of business to ensure the right of self-defense does not end when you enter your business.

1.) More explicitly clarifies that openly (visibly) carrying (OC) a firearm in Alabama is not a crime. Specifically, it explicitly states that OC in and of itself does not justify a charge of disorderly conduct.
2.) Make Alabama a "Shall Issue" concealed carry weapon (CCW) permit state. Sheriffs must issue a CCW permit to any citizen unless they have somewhat specific evidence as to why they shouldn't. Sheriffs must provide a reason for their decision to deny a permit. Under our current "May Issue" laws, sheriffs can deny a CCW permit for any or no reason at all, without explanation. (Tidbit: Our "May issue" law, just like our "No firearms at demonstrations law" is an anachronism from Alabama's days of institutionalized racism.)
3.) Set up an appeals process to handle any denial, revocation, or suspension of a CCW permit.
4.) Requires that the sheriff issue (or deny the issuance of) a CCW permit within 30 days of application.
5.) Requires the sheriff to use the NICS background check system to verify eligibility of anyone wishing to obtain CCW permit.
6.) Requires the sheriff to issue permits for up to five years. Under current laws, CCW permits expire yearly.
8.) Requires sheriffs perform specific background checks on non US citizens prior to issuing a CCW permit to them, and disallows the issuance of a CCW to anyone here illegally.
9.) Makes it illegal for a public or private employer to restrict or prohibit the transportation or storage of a lawfully possessed firearm or ammunition in an employee’s privately owned motor vehicle while parked or operated in a public or private parking area if the employee satisfies a number of conditions, but makes it legal for a public or private employer to restrict or prohibit the carrying firearms while on the employer's property.
10.) Sets up the following "gun free" zones (unless permission is given):
A.) Inside the building of a police, sheriff, or highway patrol station.
B.) Inside or on the premises of a prison, jail, halfway house, community corrections facility, or other detention facility for those who have been charged with or convicted of a criminal or juvenile offense.
C.) Inside or on the premises of a facility which provides inpatient or custodial care of those with psychiatric, mental, or emotional disorders.
D.) Inside a courthouse, courthouse annex, a building in which a District Attorney's office is located, or a building in which a county commission or city council is currently having a regularly scheduled or specially called meeting.
E.) Inside any facility hosting an athletic event not related to or involving firearms which is sponsored by a private or public elementary or secondary school or any private or public institution of postsecondary education, unless the person has a CCW permit.
F.) Inside any facility hosting a professional athletic event not related to or involving firearms, unless the person has a CCW permit.
G.) Inside any building or facility to which access of unauthorized persons and prohibited articles is limited during normal hours of operation by the continuous posting of guards and the use of other security features, including, but not limited to, magnetometers, key cards, biometric screening devices, or turnstiles or other physical barriers.
11.) Clarifies that it is illegal for any town, city, municipality, or any other state organization to make laws relating to firearms or related objects. Only the Alabama state legislature can make the rules, local firearms ordinances are illegal under Alabama state laws.
