Wow, talk about things going to shit really fast. The wave period appears to have been the worst possible, followign wave pushed the bow into the forward wave, swamping the boat in seconds.

To be honest, we rarely if ever put on our life jackets when fishing in a boat that large offshore.
Never let a large following wave overtake you. My boat has a real deep front and will make you pay for that in an instant.
Exactly, always try to surf a following wave in this situation. But given the situation (tight pass, large closely spaced waves going into a falling tide) I think any of us could have gotten into trouble too quickly to react.
That's the stuff that bad dreams are made of. The boater should have gotten on the back of the wave and ridden it in. That was a classic example of pitchpoling when you get caught going down the face of the wave. He probably got into that mess before he realized that it was time to put on a life jacket, then suddenly he had his hands too full to do so, then he was swimming. Really scary watching a boat go down like that.
