You can thank or complain to the Park Superintendent, Lisa Laraway about the beer at the pier. She didn't give up after first rejection.
The restaurant probably has a better chance with beer on the menu.
they must have pulled a fast one on us:bang:mad:
Personally I don't see anything wrong with beer being served at the roost. After a long hot day of fishing I wouldn't mind a cold beer and a snack. That's just me though.
Ill add, beer served at the restaurant and BYOB on the pier are 2 different things. That's up to the pier staff to wrestle that monkey.
Money talks...
I'm gunna sit back, watch, and wait till someone gets hammered (and violent), unfortunately, I'm afraid it is inevitable, I just hope I'm not there when it happens, is there a limit on what they can sell?
I went to the Town Council meeting last year and made my feelings about beer on the pier known. I was against it then and my opinion has not changed. I've already witnessed a couple of blowups on the octi recently and I'm afraid RodbuilderESM is right about worse things to come if alcohol is easy to get.
I like your thinking man, but do it quick so "the man" don't see you ;)
Sorry guys but I'm glad they have pier beer now..saves the walk to the parking lot .... Now we just need bushwhackers
it isn't the regulars that are going be a problem, for instance, Peaches, odds are, your not gunna go and get belligerent on us, it's the tourist that just doesn't care that will prove to be problematic, if everyone only drank one or two, it'd be great, but some people just do not care that they are in a public place with children present
There were a group of folks that walked on the pier a couple weeks ago from the beach who were obviously drunk, came all the way to the octi. You could tell they were entering the "fightin side" of drunkenness. All it would have took is them to get hooked or casted over to cause a rumble. Hopefully the GSPD will make their presence known more often with this in effect now.
AH hell, this'll be interesting. On a plus though, if they are serving alcohol they also become liable to keep people from getting skunk drunk. They just need to be careful about who they are serving especially given all the families that are around. There's no way to stop everyone so it'll be up to the locals to report those who are past that line and help prevent things from getting ugly. It ain't new orleans so they have no problem arresting the drunks there out of hand. Can't lie though it does sound awesome to watch a sunset with a cold beer in my hand from the pierhouse.
Can't do that sunset thing, Tofer. The bar is on the wrong side of the office and you can't take the beer on the pier.
I agree wholeheartedly about the one or two beer thing. It's the folks who drink like I used to that worry me.
I don't see it as a major problem, beer can not be taken outside the walls of Sam's Roost. If they were smart, beer could only be purchased with a food order.
If things get out of hand, call the pier house @ 251-967-3474 or GSPD @ 251-968-2431 and it is really bad 9-1-1
Here is the pier's email if you care to share your opinion:
gulfpier.statepark@dcnr.alabama.gov
Have to agree with PurpleN Gold and Peaches .
a two beer limit would be nice. I have absolutely zero tolerance for drunks. I've seen way too many people in the ER because of alcohol.
I'm only 14, but my mother (when I knew her) was an alcoholic, and that is the reason for my strong opinion on this topic, I cant even count all the crashes she was in and fled the scene so she wouldn't have her license revoked. It is amazing that her was never severely hurt. Alcohol CAN bring out the worst in people
Only reason for adding this is in case anyone wants to know why someone my age is involved with this topic.
This is a slippery slope gentleman, and being a tourist my opinion may not carry as much weight. But I think having beer on the Pier is the wrong thing to do. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy beer. Hell, I'm from Wisconsin where people have beer with their cornflakes! I'm sure most people would be ok in limiting their intake, but then you get the types where "one isn't enough and twelve is to many"...."instant asshole, just add beer". Also with so many lines, hooks, knives not to mention gaffes things could get pretty ugly. Stepping off my soapbox now.....
Was wondering, other than beer, how is the "resturant" doing. Was there right when it opened and wasn't much going on.
alot more folks in town now, no doubt. Ate lunch at the Fairhope pier once, but that's a totaly different thing.
Here's a thought, when the state crashes and burns we get Rockingchef to get the "franchise"!!!
Ha. BigDee already asked if I wanted a job there. They were looking for someone, but they weren't paying enough for me. If they up the anti a little bit, I might consider it.
Don't think I've seen more than four tables filled at any one time. I think when it was planned, it was expected to be more of a bar than a restaurant. I can't figure out exactly what sort of venue it's supposed to be, located in a prime position at the edge of the Gulf, but drowning out the sound of the waves with local performers playing loud country music over a crappy sound system---more noise than music---and featuring a menu that was dreamed up by someone with a shaky grasp of reality. If you're serving families with kids, you need burgers, dogs, fries and grilled cheese----also need sandwiches for fishermen. Oh well, that ain't my monkey.
I love the hamburgers and mac and cheese half of the time, sometimes the mac is ok sometimes it isn't, of course this is after not eating for 7-8 hours, the smoothies aren't bad either, but come to think of it, I never seen more than 4 or 5 tables with people either :confused:, I always sit at the bar
My wife and I ate lunch there one day while we were vacationing at the pier. I was not impressed at all with the menu, the food, the service, or the price. We don't drink and wish beer wasn't sold for the same reasons rodbuilder noted. JMHO
I worked at a night club for 2 years doing every job under the sun but bar tend. Alcohol in moderation is ok, but when you get into the excessive consumption you run into problems. Ironically the bar tenders are responsible for the patrons and their alcohol consumption. If a customer has to many and gets in their car and has an accident and kills someone, the bar tender can be charged as an accessory to murder. I for one have dealt with drunks who were friendly, and those who were combative and really don't have a desire to do so again, especially with my children around. I am like everyone else and enjoy a cold beverage when done fishing, but in a major public setting it must be in moderation.
The burgers they serve are baked in an oven? What genius came with that idea? Just plain poor management and planning.
Nobody ever answered when will bushwhackers be served :drunk
any rumors of "other" drinks being served ?
If they would pay just a little bit better I would go in there and jazz everything up. They are basically wanting to polish a turd into a gold nugget which just isn't doable in a foodservice situation.
Peaches, when the G.S. Council voted down their liquor license application, they were able to get a beer license since it was State property, but they still can't serve hard stuff.
Its always the same.Ive been out on boats with men and right in the middle of a drinking trip some idiot breaks out a fishing pole.....smile
