3year plan, moving to paradise
Well, the plan is now in place to move from Michigan to GS area in 3 years. My wife and I are both 50 and will be able to retire in 3 years. We have been visitors since 1985 once or twice a year every year since then. I have a few questions which hopefully some of you may be able help with. The first one is real estate and location. Budget wise is somewhere between 140-190k. Looking at the greater Foley area based on price range. My first question is what is the year round flair like around Foley? Is it relatively quiet even on the weekends? Most likely will be out of the City proper. Is it a very tight knit community? I’m sure we will plug in to a church, most likely get part time jobs to just stay a little busy and of course fish daily. Looking for thoughts from some of you that may have done the same.
Blessings

The only qualifications I have to answer your thread is that I have had the same aspirations. The only thing I WILL add is get on Realtor.com., I look at it daily. We looked at several houses last fall hoping to agree on something(yeah right). I won't go into some of the other things you asked about, I have asked and researched the same things, but am not an expert. I will leave it to others. All of the homes we looked at fell into your budget.
Actually, this was to be my year, but with the pandemic thing, I'm afraid that's not possible now and I'm less than pleased about it. GOOD LUCK to you, however.Last edited by HobieKen; 04-11-2020 at 05:31 PM.

Brian, as a long time resident of Orange Beach, I would strongly urge you to look into the Elberta area. If you want a tight-knit farming community, that's it. I don't know that you will find very much in your price range, but you may get a nice surprise in this Elberta area since it has not yet become too touristy. You would still not be too terribly far from the beach---as I'm sure you are aware, the closer you get to the beach and to water, the prices of real estate rise exponentially. Foley has all of the advantages and problems you find anywhere else.

What part of Michigan are you from? I lived in michigan for 30 plus years before moving to oklahoma 5 years ago... I'd like to move back to the north, lol, or south to the gulf. We try to make a few trips to the gulf shores area each year, we've camped in Elberta, and Haywire is right, good people, nice little community. Lately the other half has been convincing me to stay in condos near the beach- which does have its benefits. I have to say that I like the Foley area better in the winter. In the spring and summer it's a little busy for my taste- if I were to consider living there full time

born n raised in Grand Rapids and moved to big rapids (Ferris state) in 1998.
I have done some housing research in Elberta but seems to exceed our range to make this work.
like I said it is a three year plan and that is solely based on when our last child will be done with college. It may be postponed a bit with this C-19 epidemic as her clinicals May be pushed back 6 months as she lives at home trying to save a bucks.
our next trip south will be October, maybe we will have to drive around the outer reaches of beech life but it’s hard to do when I’m surf fishing 16 hours a day rain or shine!

Check out Co. Road 20 to the east of Foley and south of Elberta I see a lot of houses in your price range. They don't have a lot of property with them but if your like me would rather spend time fishing than working in yard.

My son and his wife had a house there don't know the price but was a small neighborhood. Lots of big property owners around so won't be to congested.

Use Zillow to find what's in your price range. If you want the name of a good realtor pm me
I’ll be sliding into town March 10-14. Can you have it warm and sunny for me then? And also, how about having the fish biting??? :D
