01/07/17: How Cold at Your Place?

23 degrees with a 20-30 mph wind this morning in Springhill. Damn, thats cold for Mobile AL!!
They missed the forecast by about 7 degrees.
Crazily, we tried to go duck hunting, agreed to meet up at the ramp at 6:30 and assess things.
Glad we did. The north wind over-powered what should have been a reasonably "high" low tide.
There was not enough water left in the upper bay to hunt any of our spots. Places that should have had 2' of water were dry.

Gotta go outside an pick satsumas before it freezes again tonight.

On another note, I forecast that we will have a mullet die off in the canals all over Mobile & Baldwin Counties tomorrow morning.

It's 20 degrees in Grove Hill this morning, but I confess that I didn't get up at the crack to see if it was any colder at sunup. I had my Hudson's Bay blanket snugged up over my ears. I was awakened several times last night by the sound of big pine limbs breaking off and crashing to the ground near the house from the weight of accumulated freezing rain. I never saw any of what I thought of as snow, but saw lots of ice crystals blowing around in front of the security light which was constantly being activated. Not saying that there was no snow at all because there were long stretches when I was snoring instead of looking out the door.

I don't see any real damage around the house except for those limbs, but then I haven't been out and about, feeling that I should keep a close watch on the fireplace for a while. It got cold enough in the living room last night for my goldfish (Bruce) to hide under a rock and refuse to come out until I warmed things up.

The rain had soaked the bird feed on the feeding station and it froze, so I had to endure some abusive (fowl?) language from my feathered friends until I did something about it. The little guys are really stoking their furnaces in this cold.

Well, I'd better throw a couple more chunks on the fire to keep the heat pump from overworking itself. Get some use out that wood that I suffered backaches and pinched fingers for last spring.

Carl just wanting to see the mullet behind house would be nice.The wind has the water in the bay like chocolate milk.I wanted to catch some on our dock but even in 2 feet of water can't see the bottom.On a normal day I can see a few hundred in schools swimming by.After the strong winds it takes a few days to clean up the water so the visiabilty is ok.
Hope your wrong about mullet die off but I agree it's happens in this crazy weather pattern.

Carl hows the duck season going for you guys ?

Duck season has been hit or miss. We have lots (and I mean thousands) of gadwalls but they have been tough to get to decoy. Some days you can scratch out a few, other days you just watch flock after flock avoid you and land 200 yards away.

I do a of of diver hunting. Lots of redheads this year, both in the Upper Bay and down south in Perdido Bay & MS Sound. If you are in an area where they want to be, 2 bird limit of redheads is easy. Hardly any bluebills in the spots I have been hunting which has been disappointing. Buffleheads just started showing up last week.

With this cold snap freezing everything north of us, once the wind calms and the water comes back, we should be covered up with ducks.

We have 19 up here in the WV. Panhandle,I can't wait to get back the South , Ga. about May or so.

Carl I looked up redhead duck I'm from Jersey and never saw a redhead duck they are a pretty duck.My brother was a big duck hunter.I showed him a pic and that redhead and he loves ducks and didn't see any in South Jersey before.I was a bow hunter and loved hunting season and been in Alabama 6 years now and stopped bow hunting.Thank God for many days hunting and fishing.Also in jersey my brother hunted lots of Black ducks and mallards.
I can see how Duck Hunting can get in your blood lots of my buddies were duck hunters.
My problem Deer hunting was I had great places to kill deer.

Haywire I heared some branches breaking also crazy wind for sure.My brothers dog has a blanket over his whole body now that's a smart dog.

We woke up to a cool 8 degrees this morning. It's been a pretty mild winter for us other than a few artic cold fronts. One day snow so far. Next week we're in the low 60's. Welcome to NW Arkansas.

We left Gulf Shores EARLY Friday morning (2:30) to beat the bad weather they had forecast for the Birmingham area. It was 60 as we pulled out of town....10 when I got home...zero when I got up this morning. I would normally say 10 degrees is no big deal but it felt bone chilling cold after being in GS for a week.Got through the rain south of Cullman with temps staying just above freezing and I thought I had it made...wrong. Started snowing at the Tennessee state line and the roads got nasty. Driving through Nashville on snowy/icy roads was not fun to say the least. We had a great week in Gulf Shores and bad roads are a risk you take with winter travel. I'd take that chance and come down next week if I could.

9 degrees at my hunting spot just across the line in TN this morning with a 12mph NNW wind. My deer must have been in their caves by the fireplace. A dusting of snow was still on the ground but not on the roads. Got up to a balmy 23 this afternoon.
