Two piece versus one piece King Rod

Need some input . I really want a king rod ,but am debating if I should try to get a two piece and exactly what I would be sacrificing . I have a long haul to get to the Gulf and usually come for a month at a time . My car is just so big and with the limited space 7.5 ' and 8' one piece rods are into the dash of the car ,which really is something I can live with since they are pointed toward the passenger seat ,but the wife ,being the passenger doesn't seem to want them bouncing around in her face for 14 hours . I know the obvious solutions are to get a truck ,suv ,van or get rid of the passenger . A two piece King Rod would be a lot cheaper . In all seriousness what do you think ? As always Thanks !!!!

I don’t claim to know a lot about rods, but I do know that having fishing rods bouncing in your wife’s face for 14 hours is a really bad idea.
I prefer one piece over two piece, but I do have some two piece rods that I still use. In fact, I had Pier Pest put new guides on my ol’ yella rod that is part of a comb from J & M back in 2008. That rod has killed a lot of feesh and it always goes to the pier with me! ;D
Just be sure you check that the end is well seated in the butt end once in a while, or :boohoo:

Ditto on the feesh killin ability of two-piece rods.
Look on it as a tool to fit YOUR needs.

Just be sure you get a 'quality' rod with a good ferrule (connection).
The ferrule is another component in the rod that needs occasional care and attention to work properly.
I prefer a fiberglass or graphite over metal, because of the tendency of metal ferrules seem to stretch & shrink too much and corrode some.

You may have a slight loss of sensitivity due to the ferrule, but it is hardly noticable for most anglers.

BTW most of my 7' rods are two piece, but I keep them together 98% of the time and they 'feel' just like one piece rods to me :fishing:

    +1

2 piece definitely tucks nicely out of the way
    Screw it. Let's ride.

If this shows up twice ,MY BAD, .Thanks, that eases my mind about a two piece . Any suggestion as to who could ,would ,be willing to build a two piece rod at a reasonable price . I mostly live line when fishing for Kings . I would want at least a 7.5' rod with large ID. guides and a cork handle .Other than that I have VERY little knowledge as it pertains to rods. I might consider a second hand rod as well.

Re: Two piece versus one piece King Rod

I have a couple of very old 2 pc rods that have killed thousands of fish over the years. They have since retired to bait poles, but as #r said, as long as it is positioned correctly and set, you won't feel much difference, if any at all.

One is 30 yrs old this year, and I'd put it up against any 1pc in playing a fish. I can easily store them in the trunk of the car.

My wife gets annoyed driving 30-60 min with poles dangling. I couldn't imagine 14 hrs!

I think pier pest uses a 2pc king rod also that he mentioned before.

Re: Two piece versus one piece King Rod

I have personally never lost a single fish due to a rod being of multiple pieces...I'm not an engineer but I would imagine there is a slight, if any, loss in structural integrity but not enough to be noticed. The amount of pieces a rod happens to be, is merely for storage/ portability issues...which sounds like it would be ideal for your wife ;D

Go to J&M with your car he can build one that will fit where you want it.

Think we may build a couple wacky color rods and rent them out for $25 a week.

My king rod is a 30 year old 8' 2 piece glass rod. It has hauled in a lot of kings both in the boat and on the pier, as well as snapper, bull reds, cobia and sharks.
My backup king rod is a 20 year old 2 piece glass rod that belonged to my dad. Same story.
Nothing wrong with a 2 piece rod.
