    stripping rod

found another beater rod.....starting to strip the old paint off....debating on guides for the rebuild (thinking maybe K frame series) sets I have seen have multiple of the same size eyelets ??

dang these conolon blanks are pretty when stripped to the natural fiberglass blanks

thinking this one will need the but end cut down it is 20in to the start of the reel seat.....I think the other one was set at 16in that John did ??

Can't go wrong with the K series guides even though you can use cheaper one . This is case where you do get what you pay for in MHO .

Ironman, are you talking about a casting rod or a spinning rod? If it is a spinning rod, 20" to the butt guide should be fine, with a casting rod it would be good too. If you cut the butt back and you replace the reel seat, the fore grip and the rear grip you could run into problems. I wouldn't recommend it. Ya know, you can't weld those fiberglass rods, maybe you could, I don't know!!! Some of the epoxy used on the guides is very hard and difficult to remove. MHO after building rods for 40+ years.

this will be my first, so any and all help(suggestions is welcome).....the end of the butt to the beginning of the reel seat all looks OK(split grip) it will stay....just seems a little long(few inches) I'll unpack the one John redid (I kinda helped.... WATCHED) and measure that one but for now it is fine....a few inches can always be cut off later .....I am not one for fancy, but functional still want it to look decent though.....maybe I should have someone else do it then.....haha.....got to learn sometime I guess and as stated .......it's an old beater rod bringing back to life ......hopefully another treasure found

First of all, what you going to use it for? What you have is an old Carolina heaver rod if the butt is that long and if you want to surf fish with it the length will be fine. But if yor are looking to make a cobia or pier rod out of it the butt length should be between 14 and 16" from the butt cap to the bottom of the reel seat if it is up-locking.

Ironman, I was talking 20" from the center of the reel seat to the first guide, is that what you were talking about? You wouldn't want it much less than that distance unless it is a casting rod. Just remember that you can't make silk out of sow's ear. (lol)

that is what I thought you made mine 16in to the beginning of the reel seat from the butt cap....this seems more the length of a surf rod, as far as grip area....this doesn't have the aluminum 1in piece like the other blank.....it is fiber glass all the way through the grips....20inches from butt cap to beginning of the reel seat, and fairly light weight but on the stiffer side (flex).....just playing around with it and learning

I have one treasure you redid that is good for me, I really don't see me using any other rod but that one, for king fishing or the one Obie did for a lighter weight king or spanish rod .....I just like those blanks and want to try and do a build after I did the hand gaff last summer
until I fish it I really don't know what to expect from it.....it needed guides bad....I think it could be cut down later if needed....I am not one for the beach fishing so it will be for the pier.....I should have made note of the details..... line weight and flex before stripping that area.....it is what it is and feels close to me

Read the post flyguy, the distance he is talking about is the length of the butt, not the reel to the stripper guide.

If I'm not mistaken the blank slim uses is a 9' and slim wanted a 10' to help with his casting a little. Believe the net handle makes it 10.
