Restore reel

I have an old Penn 105 that I want to refurbish myself. It has lots of oxidation and will need some new bail parts, but I got those. Mainly I need some advice on cleaning off the oxy and what good coating to put on it. My grandfather has done this one a couple times by brushing it with a soft metal bristle brush and spraying it with lacquer. I want to completely restore it this time though, if possible. Anybody out there completely restored an oxidized reel? If so how'd you do it? Thanks for any info.

If your doing it for sentimental reasons or playing around,go for it. If your doing it because you think it's a good reel to fish with,throw it away and spend 30 or $40 on a new reel in the same class but better. I think we sold the 105 for $39.99 when it was still made and it was not worth it back then.

I got an old 60 LongBeach at a flea market and when I took the 20 year old mono off it the spool was bent.
got one from this place in two days for a little more than $20.
That is the deal I bought it to hang on the wall but I had to fix it first. Go figure.
Even got a new set of drag washers.
Wish I had one of my GPs old reels.
