Respooling
So just curious, how often do you respool your reels? I finally broke down and redid my king reels last night, and will do a few more tonight. It was probably 4-5 months on the king reels, which is pretty awesome for me, and maybe 4-6 on all my others. Does anyone flip their line over after so long? I had even considered splicing some on ones where the line was still looked new on a lot of it, but didn't have a ton left. Just wondering what the "old school" guys do.

Re: Respooling
roughly every 2 months lol
Give a googan a king, and he can eat for a day. But teach a googan how to kingfish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years

Re: Respooling
Forget flipping mono, too much memory. The Nelson brothers were the ones that did the most splicing and cannot remember a line failure but I was very young and they could do no wrong in my book.I've had mono to mono blood knot in my line for a while and have not panic when it came off the spool.I did play around with some 15lb Ande and a Berkley digital scale after seeing this post and this is what I found out. While fishing my drag setting is around 1lb 7oz and the max I would ever apply to a fish with 15lb line would be 4lb 3oz and that would be at the pier ready for gaff.I am not taking into consideration that my trigger finger is part of my drag.A blood knot broke at 8lbs but a quad wrap uni to uni broke at a little over 11lbs.With numbers like that I have no problem splicing fresh line on top of seldom used line as long as the knot is far enough down that it doesn't get hung up while casting.

Re: Respooling
Remove the old line and respool.Mono is foto sensitive and the longer it is exposed to the sun the more it changes. Some lines get more brittle while others get softer ; making any splice problematic. How often you change it will depened on the type of reaction the line has to light or how your pocket can handle it.The lines that soften will last longer, but stretch more and more over time making it hard to set a hook on fish with a hard mouth;where the brittle line will give you a sudden falure at hook set or at the worst of all times, when you trying to get a fish to the gaff.I us Spectra it does not foto degrade;the color fades, but there is no loss of line test strength;it lasts for years;on one of my reels it's over 5 years old ; sliced three times. The splice knots have held with tarpon ;sharks, flipper and jacks when I lock down the drag to break them off or to drag the fish back to the pier.It has other problems but they have nothing to do with the quality of the product and its longevity.

Re: Respooling
Awesome info, thanks for response guys. I went ahead and respooled for now. Not too bad when you do it yourself. Cool info on the line tests John, I always use a uni to uni splicing mono and have had good luck with it. I use the uni for all kinds of stuff.

Re: Respooling
Good stuff! :yippee:
A couple more points came to mind on the care & feeding of fishing line.
Besides breaking down from UV in sunlight, monofilament line is also heat sensitive.
Just being locked up in a car on a HOT summer day can degrade your line.
Mono is best stored in a dark (or shaded) space with controlled temp & humidity.
Wet line carries salt which can cause corrosion on a metal spool.(RETIRED) mostly.

I’ll be sliding into town March 10-14. Can you have it warm and sunny for me then? And also, how about having the fish biting??? :D
