A while ago I made a rod travel tube from some thin wall 4" pvc, worked great, but padding the rods so that they didn't rattle inside was an issue. I'm thinking I can simplify things and save time by using the lengths of black foam pipe insulation around the rods and inside of the pvc. Has anyone tried this, or can anyone think of a better option?

That should work fine. I have used pipe insulation to wrap around my rod and sabiki rig to keep it from tangling---a stiff breeze will blow it off, though.
Inside the tube you don't need to pad the whole rod -- pipe insulation a short distance down from the tip will limit movement. Of course that does not stop abuse -- I have a photo of a two-piece rod mailed to me. It arrived with the (cardboard) tube folded in half, and a two piece rod had become a 4-piece. :eek:
I just use bubble wrap or stuff plastic bags around the tips and first eyes. Seems to work
I use it on my good custom rod when I travel. I do make cut outs in it for the large eyes.
What I've done in the past, and it seems to work quite well, is wrap the rod butts in a beach towel, push them in the tube, then wrap the rod tips in another beach towel, and finish pushing them in the tube. No damage so far...
Bring more rods, pack tight.....butt ends first,then the opposite once you can't get anymore in the tube......has worked for me for many years......last trip never noticed any noise......but then the tube was one the roof rack outside......I sure will miss the old van for my trips.....Istill think I can pack the small upright freezer in the suv
