A while back John G posted about the possibility of rod or pier cart rental.
Comming down in 4 weeks...have ideas on "creating" a cart but figure it
would be alot easier if one was available to rent. Need to start working on it...
figuring out where to start is the hardest part. After looking at all the pictures of "Pier carts and other contraptions" I figure mine won't be the worst looking!
I found a cooler with wheels was the easiest for me till I found a small aluminum for 50.00.... I just mounted rod holders on the sides and that worked for several years, still have it and take it to ball games to watch the grand kids play, and the rod holder doubles as a good big umbrella holder ....there is a big cooler that has larger wheels they sell now that would be great for the longer fish to fit....I have thought of getting it got for fish and to pull behind the pier cart....I will be making a pier cart here soon (or at least trying) that will fit into my reese hitch ....got to play around with stick welding aluminum or see if I can get my tig to work on it....that way I can make it big enough for a large cooler and not worry about getting it the vehicle to travel with
Unless things have improved immensely in the last 30 years, stick welding aluminum would be a poor choice. Go with the TIG, it is the preferred method for the size of the materials you'll be using on this project. I do know that there have been vast improvements in TIG machines and methods, but the older TIG m&m's would still be the second choice.Quote:

Your right about the stick welding aluminum. I have bought the rods and tried and it has not worked very well. It ended up all spattered up. Maybe the rods were old when I bought them and I'm just to stupid to get it to flow right. I am not a certified welder but I can lay down some 7018 that will hold longer than the steel around it. I learned to TIG when I took the trip south and it is not easy but you get the hang of it after a while. It is just like stacking up nickels. Aluminum nickels.
I've got a bunch of rods already(free to me) so I'll play with it some and also try and get the tig to flow too(I have some filler rod(free to me) ....and a bunch of 2x2x1/4in angle(free to me) so what the heck....free is always good and try out something and I like a challenge anyway even if it doesn't pan out.....
I am starting to miss working where I could score some good things.... they were pitching out....lead,stainless,aluminum....there was always something on different jobs here is a stairway for free and it is handy for my older age and the hill side that used to be flat rocks cut into the hillside....kind of appropriate for a retired ironworkers cabin....I thought
I bought a steel four wheel cart/wagon from Tractor Supply a few weeks back on sale for $49.99 plus tax. Made a rod rack using 5 1-1/2" pvc sch40 tees and 2 90's and some scrap 1-1/2" sch 40 pipe. I used 4 stainless radiator clamps to secure it to the side of the wagon. It has room for a cooler, tackle box and a 5gallon bait bucket. My hoop net fits beside the other stuff. got the pvc fittings and a small can of pvc cement for about $13 at a local commercial plumbing wholesaler. These things would be twice that at Home Depot.
I have no problem taking a few large carts out of inventory and making them rentals for $25 a week or $5 a day.
