    Penn 700 reel issue

I just looked at a penn 700 in real clean shape....had an issue I couldn't figure out between the spool and the rotor or something....it caught or clicked every now and then, not every turn of the handle but maybe every 2 or 3 turns....never did it without the spool on(either one), plus the drag was real catchy (not smooth)
I passed on it..... but still might buy, it if I can figure out what is wrong
    any help??
had a 9ft Berkley rod too (2 pc with a few issues) basically junk or rebuild it

Sounds like the same problems I have with mine. the rotor cup is probably bent/warped. I upgraded to HT100s on mine but there were other issues that caused the drag to still sucked. The Reel Doc did his best but couldn't get it 100%. Its fine though, he is gonna build me a 704 here in a couple if months so all will be well.

If I was a Spinfisher fan I'd be tempted to buy a 700 for the sideplate alone. Me thinks they so sexy, lol.

I got mine in a set of three of them for $100. I kept the worst one(the other two worked flawlessly and were in great shape) hoping that it would be a simple fix. I sold the other 2 to John G who bought them mainly for the sideplates and parts. I have to about though, those side plates definitely have a nice retro look to them.

the side plate fits the 706z the one I picked up used I thought of a custom paint on it but John said I would need the metal side plate. heck ebay had the torpedo handles for 29 ....this is real clean with extra spool and might be an easy fix if I knew what the heck I am doing?? maybe I'll go back....I can't believe as good as it looks it would have an issue .....I could always part it out and recoup the cash for it....and wish the rod was a little nicer
    Thanks for the reply's
Maybe I'll drop it off with the 6500 at J&M this trip for repairs??

turned out an easy fix ,with a new drag washer (hopefully) and the Teflon bottom drag washer was missing and the dog on the bottom of the spool was hitting the counterweight screw on the bottom of the rotor cup.....we'll see when the washers get here, but seems to be OK with a thin metal washer for the clearance ....it is a clean reel but still bailed and only closes with the reel handle turn like the 704

would be a good trolley reel

Ya, you can't bake the paint on with a plastic side plate. I had to dig through my old worn-out parts to find a metal sideplate when I had mine painted.
I figure it this way, if everyone in the world had a lie clock, whose hands moved once every time they lied. You could use any politicians lie clock as a ceiling fan.

It wouldn't hurt a thing to run two of any like washer or disk, back to back. Getting the same height on the drag stack may or may not be necessary. If it is necessary, then do what you have got to do to get it right.
