Jigs

This is a smaller version of a rig I like from the mid-Atlantic region with a larger butter-bean (1-2 oz) on bottom and a 1/8 or 1/16 on a round head on a short dropper a foot above. The butter-bean cuts thru current or surf turbulence and can be dressed with bait or plastic. In fact I've caught more often on bottom jig.

The goofy looks really tasty if I were a fish.

Then the loop got longer and folkes in south FL started calling the longer loop variation a "Silly Willy"

Either way, the key is the brightly colored 'banana jig' (1/2 to 3/4 oz) and the 'kicker' is the fly.
Keeping it on a fairly short shanked hook seems to be the norm...

My teasers are tied on a very short shanked 1/0 hook.... kinda hard to tie(with my fat fingers), but getting better as I do more....tried to leave a little hair at the hook eye(like sandflea gave me 1 of his) , but not sure I will anymore

if I fish this it will be with a dropper, tied in front of the jig, or silly willy style

Bill, a fly tying vice would make your life so much easier. You can pick one up for around 20 bucks. As many jigs as you tie you'll wonder why you hadn't done it sooner.

I might have one, but very small the pressure I put on these tying I most likely would break it.....it's done in the vise ,then to the alligator clips for super glue, then nail polish....put a tv down there so I have company:D

The next pour of goofy looking jigs turned out pretty good , getting better at the open 1 piece mold I made....can't wait to try them

I took a fly tying course from troutunlimitedin1981. I am not a trout fisherman but have caught thousands of crappie and other fish with my tied jigs. A fly tying vice is necessary to produce any quantity. I think it cost about 50 bucks and then I bought a basic package that included a vise and supplies for another 50 bucks. Best money I ever spent.

Did you ever make it down this spring? Any plans for a fall trip?

Hey Bill..I made a single dropper rig, with a short leader about 6" above the sinker loop. Put the crazy jig where the sinker would go - and the teaser on the loop.....EVERY pompano I caught came on the teaser.....orange nylon, red thread.
We Limited out almost every day.

where did you get your orange nylon?

your place has orange dyed
the picture I posted of the teasers showed the orange

True but what I bought from there was a dark orange, almost brownish. I'd like to find something brighter.
