improvised rod wrapping motor & clutch ?

getting into a few rods that need full set of guides and really don't want to hand wrap them, like the one guide I did last fall and the small hand gaff I made before that......, all for practice, and didn't turn out to bad, for my almost first try....
I did give some employees at J&M a good laugh, when trying it there on there rod wrapper finally did get one guide on the practice blank....then the pro took over Mr. John and I watched and learned a lot

I don't want to spend the money buying a power wrapper but surely there is something that might substitute.....I have an idea..... but what about some of your ideas ....I am cheap so we can't break the bank on this one time or 2-3 rod rebuilds

I'm trying to build one using a sewing machine motor and pedal. I'm also thinking about make a reel spooling station out of a sewing machine also

Bill have you checked Mudhole. Don't know how much you want to spend but I've looked at their catalog before and I think they have just about everything dealing with rod wrapping.

yea Robert, I get emails from them all the time, and have looked at some.....I do like a challenge of making something that will work OK for the few I am doing.....

Psychobilly that is where I am headed, sewing machine,
just tore the front end off of one and added the connecting nut to it for the clutch....similar to the one on the rod dryer ....going to use roller blade wheels for the support of the rod all on uni strut for adjustment .....as stated I like a challenge

and for the dryer motor a rotisserie barbeque motors that I have already done a few rods with it and worked good and cheap, garage sale finds over the years and haven't used them for the grill yet :D

I'll rent you one of my Clemens wrappers for a couple pounds of jerky... Cost to ship it would be around $30. You can bring it back to me this fall.

Darn John that is a generous offer, but would take the fun out of figuring and building something I can use.....jerky is free for you no need for a trade or rent ....maybe this year we will stay back in Orange beach and my trips will be more often to the store.....last year being 6 condo's west of the pier it was hard for me to drive by the pier.....we won't rent that place again although it was close.....I liked the one the year before in Orange Beach

Ill take a few pictures of the progress I did today and the dryer set up with the pvc & rubber clutch system that should work for the wrapper too....it holds the rod tight but the clutch is a neoprene washer inside the pvc....so you can stop the turning of the rod when applying the finish .....I like doing this stuff keeps the mind going
$10.00 sewing machine at a garage sale plus extra's....heck the foot pedal on mud hole was 79 I think....maybe that was ebay?? ....darn mind is slipping already

I'm with you love making stuff instead of buying it. Can't beat the satisfaction of building it yourself. It will be a little while before I get mine finished I'm off to Kansas City Mo. Next week to finish putting a restaurant in.

Look up the 'how we do it' videos by FLEXCOAT. they use a regular electric drill as their driving motor. It comes with a chuck:)
A few roller blade wheels,some 2x4's and you have an excellent rod wrapper, better than my pacbay one with the upgraded chuck.
Unless you get a Renzetti, the commercially available wrappers all turn the 'wrong way' for anyone who has worked on a lathe so shaping of handles etc becomes an issue.
Can you imagine trying to turn something going away from you?
Then they do not maintain thread tension except while wrapping so if you have to back up, the wrap goes lose.

I have a home made hand wrapper for all but the long under wraps and most my customer want low weight so few ask for that. I use the tip 18 inches from an old 4-8# uglystick coming over from the rear where i mount the spool carriage and that keeps tension while feeding line to where i can back up several turns and undo an oops.
Its ugly but works very well.
The small hand wrapper from mudhole is OK if you are just looking for a quick fix for a dozen or so rods.

thanks for the advice, I am only looking at 2-3 right now, a couple rebuilds bringing the old school back to life, I hope anyway....I have a thing with the old conolon blanks since John g redid one a few years ago.....it fishes so well and looks as good.....something about the natural fiber glass look when it's done I have a thing for now.
I was going to use a end of a rod for a tensioner (hold tension) unless I can find some spring still to make one....I have thought of using a light door spring for that purpose too....kinda trial and error

Bill I found a small rotisserie motor for a gas grill. It sounds rough but it does have variable speed adjust. I'm gonna take it apart and clean and lube it. If you still need something I'll let you or anybody else that may want it know how it turns out.

I think this is the chuck I used but I'm not sure. It's been 5 or 6 years ago since I built it.

The motor we use is a Dayton 2M066A, 1/15HP,5000RPM. A 3/4 inch pully on the motor and a 2'' on the chuck.

I am going to try it first with the cups I made and see if it holds up to the winding....it did great on the finishing ....the clutch was just a adjusted thru bolt with neoprene washers ....I will loose all that and lock it down for the tying .....the rubber cups hold real well ....but may need to change if they don't on the winding

Found a cheap rod dryer on mudhole, not sure about the quality but I'm gonna order one soon, and would 9 rpm or 18 rpm better for drying?

Don't go cheap on rod drying motors. You can end up regretting it in the long run. I have 4 flexcoat motors setup on my drying table. I use 1-18 and the rest are 6rpm. I use the 18 for applying finish and the 6 rpm motors once the finish has set a bit. A wise person once told me that the more rpms something turns the quicker it will wear out. And so far that has proven to be true.

I used one of my friends cheaper drying motors on a king rod once and it ended up stopping in the middle of the night and the finish wasnt set enough to stay so i had to redo it but i was lucky that was one of my first rods and probably needed redoing anyways. Also is the 6rpm motor too slow to apply the finish?
