Ghost Shrimp Sucker

Heres a basic pump for those interested.
2" PVC Pipe
1" PVC Pipe
2" Cap
1" Cap
1" T
2" Test Plug

I didnt measure when I did mine, you can use your own judgement. Theres plenty of "how to videos" on you tube but here the basic pump. Its worked great for me, caught plenty of ghost shrimp last year. Also Im sure you can grab one @ J&M's.

I found the best time to go is at low tide, look for the holes and start pumping. During the Winter I found them to be closer to the surface but the few times I looked for them during the summer they were much deeper.

thanks for postin'. They really aren't hard to build at all. I built mine last year in about 15min, and its even cheap to build if you have some pvc just laying around. I've seen ghost shrimp out fish regular shrimp quite a few times..especially when the sheepshead show up in early spring.

Back in the spring either Lows or Home Depot in Foley had a DIY kit for them,cost around $20 and the glue was included.We sell'em for $30.

Yes we have ghost shrimp. They live in the surf real close to the beach. Look for small "sand volcanos" with an opening at the top.

But the widespread presence of pinfish, small jacks and other baby fish in the surf zone during the warmer months (April through October) render their use as bait practically ineffectual.

Mornin' John, Are you the guy that pier#r mentions occasionally that works for BPS, and knows about fly fishing in your area during the Winter months? If so, or if anyone else can help, please do. The last 4 years during Jan. & Feb we have come to the Gulf area for vacation from the MN. Winters and to fish. I have always brought my 8# down, but each year I use it less, last year in Mexico Beach I didn't use it at all. That area was not conducive to fly fishing. I'm thinking the maybe the Little Lagoon, Weeks Bay area or maybe some of the local rivers would be kind enough to kick a few fish on a fly rod. Is it worth the effort to haul it down?

I built mine three years ago real cheap. The only challenge I discovered was a good valve. The best I came up with was cut from the sole of a flip-flop, with washers on both sides. I kept the rest of the flip-flop to replace the original because I thought it would wear out quick, but I'm still using the original and still carrying the spare.

So does water act as a lubricant for the plug, or should you put some sort of light grease on the plug or inside of the tube?

Water lubricates the plug just fine. I would suggest using grease on the wingnut and bolt to keep saltwater from seizing it in case you need to tighten it. I used a 2x3/4 tee in the barrel and a short length of 3/4 pvc pipe in it and the 3/4 tee on top to use as handles.

I made mine for about $20-25. You have to do some tightening or loosening of the wing nut on the plug to determine good suction of the sand. Depends on how much water is under the sand too(from my experience). I just ain't got the patience with that thing.

It is a pain in the $%# but when you are bathing your live shrimp or fiddlers with no bites and others are filling their coolers using ghost shrimp it's nice to be able to go get them. I still think a kid could make some serious cash selling them during the sheepshead bite.

Can ghost shrimp be found in the canal, or do you need to be on the gulf side?

I have a cordless 18 volt dewalt shopvac wonder how that would work ?

They're mostly found in the Gulf in shallow places.

I purchased a ghost shrimp sucker in Corpus Christi approx. 1980 time frame and still using it. Recommend you use a piece of leather between your two washers. It swells when wet and provides a good seal when sucking the shrimp out. I've got the same pieces of leather from the original build and they are as good as new.

PierR commented that Ghost Shrimp are ineffectual as bait. I've used them for years on a treble hook and they are superb bait but do not stay on the hook well. Recently the wrap system has come out and using this mesh sack to contain the ghost shrimp makes them even better as bait and will stay on the hook very well. Just cut the shrimp in half and put it in the mesh sack and follow the video on how to run your hook through the sack. This system made a believer out of me. I like their system, but believe squeezing a ghost shrimp through that little tube would render it into even softer smaller pieces.
$0.50 each isn't a bad price for the little bags though.

They're highly effective at other times, fish candy that's hard to beat.... When there aren't thousands of bait thieves.

It is easier to get a whole ghost shrimp into one if you bend it in half and put it in starting with the slimy mid section of the body. Then two "stitches" with a khale hook and stick the hook into the bottom of the bag. They don't work well in the syringe, even if you make the hole pretty big. I made some bags with the hole wider than what came with the system and used a tan colored thread instead of his light blue. Oyster works better in the syringe. Just make sure you buy your oysters and hold the receipt. Oyster harvest is closed in Baldwin County unless you farm them. A very nice man in a dark shirt told me that. I didn't argue. Not even a little bit.

I can stand within ten feet of Pier#r with my fingers in my ears and my eyes closed and still learn stuff just from the overflow of knowledge he radiates. If I can work a deal, I'm going to put him in a booth and have him answer questions at $10 a pop---$20 for personal inquiries.
