706 upgrades???
does it need any....oiled the roller and knob(spins great) ....anything needed for the drag.... to be done? gold spool?
looks to be good except for some paint loose :boohoo: and needed line
not real familiar with them....I guess I need to be :violent

Re: 706 upgrades???
The only upgrade the reel needs is a person that will fish it :poke: .You may want to consider putting 50 yards of dacron on first to help keep the spool from exploding. And don't oil the roller, louder is better.

Re: 706 upgrades???
If it's one of the green ones I always replace the old smooth drag washers with new ht-100 washers that have been treated with Cal's Drag Grease.
The second thing I do on all of my 706s is either put a Dacron backing on them, or a load it with braid with a mono top shot.

NICE....I plain on it up here first....need to practice casting and getting the line back on the roller with some kind of consistency ....just seems awkward to me the few times I have used the 302 and 706's on the pier in the past...... so back to what I know good....bailed :boohoo: ....but thanks for the advice...
and too late on the roller....it needed it, but spin's free now wasn't bad before just old and not used ....I will do the dacron, before I put the line on it

Re: 706 upgrades???
i tryed dacron once, it got real sticky and jumped off the manuel frequently, 706 is one of the toughest, most durable reels ever made, it only needs "upgrades" when somthing in it wears out. also, i agree, dont oil the roller, if it is sticking or not spinning properly, you probably need to buy a knew roller baring ( you can get them from scotts, and sometimes ebay) they're only about $10-15, if there is anything else wrong (which occording to your statement "spins great" it shouldn't, but i might be wrong) sent me or reel_doc a pm

Re: 706 upgrades???
Uh,we don't use dacron on top,only as a backing.

Funny day ...

Re: 706 upgrades???
Not funny being it was me using the yoyo that day trying to figure out what type of line worked best. That waxy stuff burned through my finger joints like a knife.

Sounds like you still have no clue what you are talking about. I have had Dacron as backing on my reels for the past 2 seasons and have yet to have a problem with it. As long as there is pressure on the line while fighting a fish I don't see how the line will jump off of the roller.

Ding ding ding ding, we have a winner. A little less talk and a little more learning will go a long way. I had the same problem when I was his age, but I grew up with guys on the pier who would tell me to shut the he## up.

You wouldn't have lasted a day on the pier when I was growing up. Just remember that there is always going to be someone out there that knows more about a subject than you do.
Now get your butt off your phone and focus on school. Spring break will be here soon enough and you can't do much when your grounded for grades.

Re: 706 upgrades???
I got the advice needed and got almost all done to the reel....except for new drag washer's but might fish it first and see how well the old due, but plan on getting a few of them anyway for this and others I have..... just for spares
Thanks to all for the advice and good read :headbang: :fishing:
I have very little to contribute to the forum..... sooooooo :boohoo:

Re: 706 upgrades???
PM me your mailing address and I will send you a set next week. The stack from bottom to top goes:octagon,Teflon, keyed, fiber, octagon, fiber, keye d.If the top keyed washer is bent due to somebody not placing it on the shaft correctly then tightening the drag knob down, flatten it with a hammer then swap it with the middle keyed washer.Do not grease the washers. If the washers in the green spool are smooth, chances are they are the original asbestos washers. If the Teflon washer is shot,a fiber can be subbed.

Re: 706 upgrades???
:yay: thanks
please include yours(address), next time I make some jerky, a bag will be headed your way.....(I haven't made it since my last trip to the coast though)....
