Old DI Pier Photo
Here is a shot of the DI Pier I took back in 2004.
By the end of 2006, the south end was virtually surrounded by sand.
I never got a chance to fish it, but hear it was a hell of a spot for specs, Spanish and redfish.

I have a lot of good memories on that pier. Got first place in 2005 in the ADSFR for Spanish off that pier.

I first fished that pier around 1960 with a Zebco 202. Graduated to a Mitchell 300 then a 302.
Thanks for posting that, brought back a lot of memories.

At precisely 9:00pm every Friday night I was there, I could toss an alewive on bottom under the light on the left hand extension you see in that pic and catch a 20+ lb bull red every time. It was also a good pier for kings as well. I use to fill a cooler up with specks fishing the rocks right before the pier house. I miss the heck out of that place
. I REALLY wish they would do something about it. I would build a board walk all the way out to sand island and then go out into the Gulf there. Or...they could go a different route and build it out into the new Pelican bay sound that was created. The latter idea would make it more of a strictly inshore option. Not sure about Kings but I know the Spaniards still run through there in good numbers.
Unfortunately, they won't do a darn thing. Mother Nature will have to move the sand again VIA another large hurricane before the city of DI does jack.Genesis 1:26

The Town of DI does not own the site, its owned by the Park & Beach Board, a completely separate entity. In either case, neither the City nor the DIPBB have the funds it would take to build a new pier or dredge the sand from around the old one. And the latter option has some serious structural, hydrology and liability issues.

With all of the money they are charging people to park out there...I'm sure they could allocate some funds. Heck, they have more money now than they did back then. They should stop wasting all of their grant money on Katrina Cut and the lighthouse land mass reconstruction. Either one of those grants could have easily paid for a new pier.

Sorry, but you are way off target.
Neither the Town nor DIPBB had anything to do with Katrina Cut or the placement of sand at the light house. And neither of those funds could have legally been used for dredging around the pier.
It would cost hundreds of thousands, if not a couple of million, to dredge out from around the pier and easily that much to build another pier. The DIPBB operates on a shoe string budget. The money they collect from entry fees would never touch it. Luckily, they have had some quality directors & crew over the years or they wouldn't even have the facilities they have now. Instead of knocking them, we should all thank them for holding things together this long.Carl

I’ll be sliding into town March 10-14. Can you have it warm and sunny for me then? And also, how about having the fish biting??? :D
