Well that sucked!!!!!

Always good to be down at the gulf but was by far the worst fishing trip I've had in quite a while. We were down from good Friday to this past Friday and fished the surf and little lagoon.

Surf fishing was hit and miss and we only fish the area in front of Kiva dunes. the rip current there was so strong you couldn't keep bait off the beach for more than 5 min at a time. We used fresh dead, frozen, gulp and bites and I only managed to land 2 trout and a cat the entire week. There was a brutal wind all week and couple that with the rip current it was a bust.

Surf and tides were too much for a Midwesterner to launch a kayak in so it was off to little lagoon...

Little Lagoon was better..couple of trout and pinfish on gulf shrimp and a read jig-head. Worked the deep channel off the kayak launch with quite a few hits but couldn't land anything. Worked the deep slips off the south shore and hooked a big red (I was using a med rod and reel with 8lb mono) so that red was probably about 10 inches long but at least it felt huge.


Cruised over a 6 foot gator in the lagoon just off the west sandy point...that was cool.

Played the State Park golf course....it was fun but wet...man you guys get some gully washers down there. Those fox squirrels are huge...tell the tourists to quit feeding them...they won't leave you alone when chipping from under the oaks.

Ran over to Aqulia Sea Food in Bon Secour...good people and good shrimp/seafood.

The guys at J&M were helpful with advise but to no avail...until next year

Yeah, We have had that fishing vacation. All things considered, we were still glad we had a vacation, and look for a better experience next time.

Looks and sounds like a great "fishing" vacation. Only thing missing was the catching. On the plus side you got to the Gulf, ate well and it appears that you have a woman that not only will fish with you, but, climb in a kayak and paddle around to do it! After every trip, my only remark is "Please Lord, one more time".

Tis better to fish and not catch, than to not fish at all.

They will tolerate a fair amount of salt, even the Gulf for short periods. Little lagoon has quite a population, especially on the west end. There are a bunch of them that hang around the ponds between Little Point Clear and the Navy Cove Condos. They go into the Bay to feed on the carcasses of cleaned fish at night.

Hey guys....we did have a great time as we always do...just kind of joking around. A local said the gators will head into the lagoon more frequently when you get a lot of run off and their small ponds lakes get mucked up that runoff.

Nope, wouldn't call it a bad vacation at all...that was my 13 year old daughter in the yak...she saw a really big gator about 75 yards from the kayak launch...I said you still want to go?...she said as long as I can paddle faster than you...why not!

The east and west ends of Little Lagoon are brackish-freshwater. The east end is fed by Shelby Lakes which are freshwater and home to a few gators. I have caught landlocked redfish and specs as well as bass and catfish on live shrimp from the bridge area just north of the pier and when wading from the parking lot to the channel going to the bridge. You may try there next time down. You will need a freshwater license and a permit to fish it.
