Vacation Insurance

We'll be at Fort Morgan beginning October 10th. According to NOAA, there are about 40-50, on average, Hurricanes/Tropical Storms in the "Atlantic" during the past 100 years.

With "the Atlantic" covering a fairly wide area, :rolleyes: any thoughts on $40 trip insurance on a $1,000 rental price? I'm thinking it's pretty low risk, but no experience with "HomeFree" policy offered by VRBO. I tend to find these are often rigged by the definition of "storm" or other weasel words used to keep the insurance $ premium and never payoff if a claim is needed.

Thoughts?

I have never purchased trip insurance so cannot give you any insight, but October is prime fishing and if there is a hurricane just hold on tight, I will be that guy out there fishing the surf.

Most places offer a refund if an evacuation order is given anyway. I'm not sure how much more the insurance gives you, but I'd ask an agent (be wary if they are selling the insurance).

With the El Nino we've got forming and the accompanying high wind shear this is not likely to be a hurricane year anyway.

Thanks guys. I'm not looking for "more" just hoping to keep the sting to a minimum if needed. I agree that the risk is minimal; El nino might cut it further, and if it does blow; I'll probably just have the wife explore the fine dining and eclectic shopping opportunities of Atmore, Huxford, and Uriah :drunkwhile I'm standing next to Perdido. I'll be the one with a beer in one hand; shrimp in the other.

If you are using vrbo. Contact the owner of the place, repeat rentals are usually more important to them than losing a customer over $1000. I would advise you not to get it. Ask them if a hurricane comes and destroys the property and makes it uninhabitable do you lose the deposit, or what happens if a hurricane comes while there and im forced to leave how would they reimburse you. If they says no way you are getting your $, find a different rental. Most tropical storms and cat 1 hurricanes, are not that bad, unless the eye is 5 to 10 mies do east of you, they are just thunderstorms.
Sure the surf is rough, and the sands blows all over the place, and it rains alot, but that is no different than a stalled out front along the coast, but it will calm down in a couple of days. Now cat 2 or higher different story.

Insurance is inherently "rigged". Otherwise, they wouldn't be selling it. This being said, I paid for it for my trip last year as it was offered during booking. I think I paid $60 for coverage on a $1500 rental fee last year, if I remember correctly. This year I booked at a place that didn't offer it, so I didn't buy it. It does appear that I have minimal ($1500) coverage with my AAA membership. I wouldn't have known that, had you not made me think about it and look into it. Thanks, I guess!
