Tastes Great!
I'd been hearing about eating those guaguanche barracuda, and tonight I got to try a mess of them. They're tasty---not the best I've ever had, actually they're quite mild. They are easy to clean, in spite of the strong smell their slime has, so there's no need to be shy of them any more. ---Just don't stick your finger in one's mouth unless you want to bleed.
There seem to be plenty of them around right now. I caught five yesterday and three today.

Thank David aka #er for passing that word along to me. Ever since I took his advice and tried them I have been spreading the word about them. Tastiest nuisance I have had.

I do not recall seeing a fish like this in the GS/OB area. Is this a new species invasion. I have caught Barracuda in the keys and also in the Carribbean. People in the keys say it is dangerous to eat them because of an illness (?ciguatera?) or something similar. In the deeper carribbean people do eat them and I have eaten them in a restaurant.

Guaguache (aka Guachanche Barracuda) are found in the summer months in this part of the Gulf of Mexico and their range is on both sides of the mid Atlantic Ocean.
They are an entirely different species from the Great Barracuda which has blue spots and is reported to occasionally.

The texture and taste of these fish reminds me of speckled trout of all things (without the usual white parasites in trout ;-)
