I see pier reports of sharks eating Spanish at the pier and think there is a relationship between the two, a few days ago at Perdido wall there was nothing happening until most fishing hooked into small sharks and I caught and released a 43" one and had 2 chew offs of my mono. A bit later a guy drifting live shrimp started catching nice Spanish so it appears sharks followed the Spanish in. Time for shark nights on the pier.
Sounds like the sharks are there for us to feed them. Sure wish they would allow us to thin them out a little.
Thinning sharks is like swatting mosquitoes-- makes me feel better to try but it is an endless task.
The night shark fishing is not going to happen anymore per park officials after seeing no actual gain and expending lots of man hours. There was talk of shark tags but at last word that isn't going to happen either. The surprising (to some including myself) thing is that the new version of the cleaning station had no affect on our shark problem.
This is a change to the pier environment that we will most likely have to live with and I believe it will continue to get worse. People are going to fish and they will keep feeding the sharks. I don't like it but I'm as guilty as anyone knowing that we are also a factor in the shark behavior.
bait comes in to feed, spanish follow them to feed, sharks follow the spanish....... and wait for us to feed the spanish to them. Circle of life, sharks win.

The root of the problem starts at the federal level with overly restrictive regulations on Blacktip shark (54" FL), one per day.
That problem carries over to the state level with ADNR MR following the Fed.
And it is exasperated by the park system outlawing shorebound shark fishing in the park and from the pier.
Alabama needs to relax regulations on Blacktip shark, and they need to allow landings on the pier just like any other legal species.
Until this two things happen, the situation will remain dismal and this overpopulation of Blacktips will continue to suppress the fishery...
