redfish bait
Hey guys I'm coming down to the GSSP Monday and I wanna hook in to some reds. I was wandering what y'all use for bait for them . I use mullet at dauphin island and it works but what about there. I've heard sand fleas and shrimp but I never had luck with them as much. Thanks

Cut bait works everywhere. If fishing in the wash and the first trench, they are there looking for sand fleas and they may be slot fish.
-
Would gulp sand fleas work cause I have them
-
What about between the octi and bathrooms that's were I normally go
-
If I were targeting slot reds I'd be in the shallows.
You could try throwing out the gulp sand fleas but it wouldn't be my first choice. Cut bait, shrimp, finger mullet, even squid would be my preferred choice. Ive caught reds on gulp shrimp or swimming mullet, but thats jigging them on the bottom.
If you can find some live sand fleas, soak them in the shallows and you can come up with reds, puppy drum, whiting. Lots of good eating fish. Pompano love them too but I don't believe its the right time of the year for pomps.

Do any stores sell sand fleas?
-
Frozen yes I dont know about live.
-
Any good frozen and if anybody is going to be there Monday let me know
-
Also I would like to try the big bulls are they around the octi or closer to the bathroom s?
-
most times the big reds are at the end of the pier and when they come through it doesn't matter what you throw out there, sometimes I think they would hit an old shoe if you could hook it and throw it out there

What would u throw far as bait for the bulls? Mullet or lys
-
I've fished bull reds with cut fresh mullet off the bottom with good results. I use a depth finder slip rig and pyramid weight enough to hold in any current and let it sit. Unless the schools are moving through on the top, then any artificial will work. I usually fish from the "T" to the octi in deeper water, using a larger circle hook.
good fishing...

Where can u get mullet in gulf shores?
-
I'm not local so can't help with where to get the mullet there. I use cut mullet a lot for bulls, but the very best bull red bait I have ever used is a 10" white trout (live) on a fish finder rig like fshntime described. It's like holding out an ice cold adult beverage to someone who's been out working in the hot sun all day, they can't resist it. You can catch the white trout with a small hook and small piece of shrimp.
