    Re: questions about mitchell 306

My son's 407 weighs 27.3 pounds. with a manual roller, crosswind and full of mono. I was able to find capacities listed online, but the numbers seem to be far fetched to me. Regardless I do believe it will hold more than enough 12-16# test to get the job done. If I was going to use one of these reels, I'd opt for a 406 because of its higher gear ratio. I would also use braid backing, not for capacity as much as protecting the spool from blowing up. I haven't heard of any 306/307/406/407 spools exploding like the 302s and company, but these reels are from the same era and material. I simply wouldn't trust these reels with straight mono knowing the sort of pressure I put on a fish.

the 306's will explode when you stretch the line to far :violent, but will hold a tarpon if you back it with braid.
this was 14lb test and about a 60lb tarpon ,he was beat and on his side when i heard the spool pop.

That is the first 306 spool I'd seen or heard of exploding. I only had a suspicion that a 306 spool was prone to exploding until now.
