What kind of leader do you use for Spanish mackerel?
40-60lb mono
I used 30 pound mono once and they bit through it. I switched to wire and didn't get another bite. Thanks for your feedback!
If the spanish are on fire i use 15lb seven strand or 27lb single. If your really having to work for them i switch to 40-60lb mono depending on water visibility.
I normally use 50-60 pound fluorocarbon leader.but that gets pricey.
So they don't bite through the heavy mono leader?
Yes, they will, but you get more bites with 50# mono. If you don't get bites, you don't stand a chance. You have to watch for fray and re-tie frequently. One day I fished side by side with Pier#r when he was using mono and I was using 10# wire---he was getting three bites to my one. Didn't take me long to switch.Quote:

Sometimes you can unravel 90# test 7 strand and use the individual wire. I have put a three or four inch section on the front of floro, too. Sometimes you get away with it. If the water is clear, though, definitely floro.
