January - What's Biting and When
Looking at the chart...
Are things usually that dead in the first week of January?
Both pier and beach
As luck has it, I have been in a position the last few years to come down at the low catch times

As a fellow Illinoisan, there is more biting down there than up here. Barely.

Historically the water temperature then is in the middle to low 60s.
Warmer water usually boosts the sheepshead bite.
Cooler water favors the whiting.

I saw one yesterday but it was closed mouth. Would not eat anything thrown. I personally know of 3 that have been caught in the last two weeks. No kings yet.
