Dang might have to bust the hoodie out this mornin!
Got a late start some dude was already straight out He hauled in two nice whiting I caught couple skippys and a 3 # blue fish dipped a couple dozen beautiful crabs Nice blue claws not spillway size but good for beachside Dude I fished from romar to sea n suds every stop less than five minutes jaws was up on me! Anyway got back and got all these messages from doom and gloom saying the coordinates were the same as 1906 on this new storm This cat has an old book that’s duct taped together that has a record of every hurricane back to the mayflower🤣
Been doing a lot of beachcombing the last couple weeks -pretty much from pastels to the stables- and I gotta tell you guys I don’t see much need for “renourishment” I wish there was something we could do to stop this but I know from past attempts it is futile. After the first renourishment a lot of folks weren’t too stoked. The dredge spoils stank and the discoloration where they were piled up on the existing pristine white sand was overwhelming. I gathered up a group of 20 or 30 people from the neighborhood and we went to town one night to join the Sierra Club. I can still remember the looks on the faces of the 5 or 6 existing members when we walked in ( what the…!) The lady in charge asked “who are you people and what are you doing here?” I said “We’re here to try and stop the overdevelopment of our beach and maybe prevent future renourishment from occurring” She shook her head and said”That’s not on our agenda sir!”😫 Oh well at least we tried! Seems like we all went to the Pony after that and drowned our sorrows!
That doesn’t sound right…The Sierra club should have been all about yall wanting to stop beach overdevelopment. There must have been other factors involved,…or she was just not up to speed. Seems odd.
Yeah the other factors were that those same folks were on the chamber and the city council! I’m trying to find the original letter that gloom wrote to the state before the initial dredging started. It made a lot of people upset but it halted the process for a few more months. They were forced to have a few more meetings away from the council where the tribe called the shots. These cats were livid ! I thought for a minute something might go down in the parking lot of the convention center after one of the meetings there🤣Those guys won in the end. They called in the “ California” and the dredging began and has never stopped
This pic (by Milton Rittelmeyer) from this morning shows the 'ins and outs' of the beach profile looking east from the GSPPier past the Convention Center and Lodge...

And this recent pic by Steve Jones shows just how far the sand has rebuilt under the pier house in two months...

Yep Say goodbye to all those pierhouse pilons when they dredge it! That saved the shallows season this year At one point it was over 8 ft deep in there! Dude I couldn’t even get in there some days There would be 30 people stacked on the house hole😂 I think that was that late January swell that burrowed out that trough #r will know the exact time I bet. It still provides! I watched the same thing happen at sea n suds for years guys
Does anyone remember how good 97 to 99 was? Those were epic years guys!
Sierra folks in the chamber and on the council. Damn,..that’s usually a good sign, but in this case it seems there was double infiltration….both to the Sierra and then to the councils. Ya never know who’s doing what these days. All you can do is follow the money,..and the actions. Sounds like the National Sierra should take a look at what these members are representing.
After 22 years I would love to see there findings... The word back then was they had basically given up on Orange Beach and Guff Shorz and were focusing on the fort Morgan area They we’re trying to make sure that no large condos or multi res establishments could be permitted near the fort They had a little more success down there That’s another cool story- what almost happened to the fort back in the day If it weren’t for old Hatchett Chandler you woulda had a six flags down there!
