Heard them called all three names growing up. Why?
kinda like dorado,mahi mahi or dolphin ......why not?
Many fresh water fish have a thousand different names too. Like the Choupique, grinnel, cypress trout, mud fish or dog fish. I call them a few other names too when I'm bass fishing and one of them bite instead.
Cobia is the official name, Rachycentron canadum is the Latin name.
Colloquial (or common) names are often descriptive of a species, or misnomers for similar looking fish.

Trade names are often those made up to sell fish and even more confusing.Quote:

How about Whiting, ground mullet, kingfish.
Or crappie, calico, sacaulat, papermouths, white perch
And cobia are found in different oceans, I think, and get some of their names from different locales. But not triple tails?
