This is NOT the brand or grinder that we are presenting. Industrial grinding equipment isn't normally advertised for a few reasons, but I can provide a smaller device that demonstrates the "idea" behind what we are trying to achieve.

Grinders such as these are typically installed inside a wall/room area and locked away in an enclosure so that they are not accessible and capable of removing human limbs.

A deposit shaft is installed externally where fish remains are tossed inside (similar to a wood chipper). Water sources are also installed at strategical points which allow freshwater rinsing (even during operation).

The liquified remains can be captured and used for fish chum or fertilizer, but for the pier, simply letting them fall into the Gulf may be the best method.

I wonder how that grinder handles 4X trebles, wire leaders, filet knives, fish scalers and God only knows what else some idiot will toss in it just because they are stupid.
If it is not indestructible and idiot proof, it will stay broke down. The one or two heads a time loading shown in the video is not going to be the reality of use on the pier.
Don’t get me wrong, I hope this will actually work and make the pier tourist fisherman friendly forever.
I still say the best and cheapest solution is to grant the pier an exception to the law; toss ‘em overboard and let the toothy grinders do their thing, they are always there and maintenance free.

Yeah, this is a primary concern. We are presenting larger ones than shown in the video--that is just a miniature example.

As for "idiots" tossing other things in it, there will have to be an elimination process for that. The simple truth is that the grinder will have to be utilized by a pier staff member and the access point will host a one way swinging door holding vat--which will prevent flies etc from forming. The vat will catch the fish parts and other things. The pier worker would have to sort it about 2-3 times per day.

My guess is the access point would need to be locked during non-business hours, and while open during the day, locals would need to help "police" what gets tossed therein.

Yes, changing the letters of the law is cheaper, but could remain unlikely. We will find out this Saturday if progress was made in the right direction.

The good news is the grinders we are showing can easy demolish lead weights, hooks, etc. I still think it should be sorted by a staff member. I am sure a few trusted fishermen would gladly volunteer to help as well.

I don't think the original grinder was INDUSTRIAL enough for the idiots. You know they make grinders that will crush boulders and turn them into gravel.

Some thoughts (if I may)
After viewing the video it's obvious there needs to be a trained human to 'feed the beast'.
It appears this thing would handle FROZEN fish carcasses just as well?
Would it be possible to have a refrig or freezer installed in the octi building with an access port folkses could stuff carcasses into for holding?
And (like you mentioned) periodically a trained employee could come out and grind the stored carcasses.
I doubt they would allow even a qualified volunteer because of the liability issue of running such a potentially dangerous device.

The one thing we do NOT want (nor can tolerate) is to have stinking, rotting, maggot infested, over stuffed garbage cans out on the pier! ???

Even the pier employee will not have hands near the grinder itself. The grinder will be out of reach. Let's say FnD is the paid soul, he would place the acceptable fish parts inside a drop shoot that would behind lock and key.

These safety measures would prevent liability for all parties involved.

The small grinder in the video can take on frozen parts, but it is so small, the heads might just dance on it for a few minutes.

Larger grinders will not have that problem. The big guns could near liquify your tackle box.

Meanwhile, the vat would certainly need a form of refrigeration to slow down the decompsition process of remains.

I used to work at a paper mill and it is unbelievable the lengths people will go to in order to circumvent every safety latch , lock and/or electrical fail-safe device known to man if they thought it would make their work easier or shorten the time needed to do a task safely.
People have lost too many fingers to mention and a few lost their lives by trying to shave a few seconds off the time to do things the safe way.

In Chicago along Lake Michigan they have grinders like this and it is amazing how well it handles big salmon heads and waste.
Just one thought or question....
Is it better to drop full fish parts over the side that sink to the bottom and get eaten and broken down by rolling with the waves along the sand - or - what would it be like if every couple hours the employee uses the grinder. How big of a chum slick would this produce and drift into the beaches where people swim?

Unless the water is dead calm, and dozens of heads get processed at the same time, then this would never be noticeable. There might be an influx of spadefish hanging out at the T helping out with the chum. :headbang:

Another possiblility though would be to box the stuff up, freeze it as chum blocks and sell it to boat fishermen.

If you are stopped for a cooler-check in the parking lot by the Boys in Blue, and you only have a pile of filets in the cooler, are you subject to getting ticketed because you can’t prove your fish were legal. I believe someone got warned for this a while back, but I can’t find the post.
Anyway, if the above is not addressed and clarified, grinders on the pier would be a total waste of money. Doesn’t the DCNR and Parks Department both fall under the same umbrella at some point. Gotta love politicians!

Well, let's hope dawg doesn't throw himself in there! The entry would be just large enough to put in a large black drum carcass or so, and would fall beyond the reach of a human limb.

The sealed enclosure where the grinder is kept would have a fail safe, so that if opened, the grinder automatically powers down. So if someone was dumb enough to climb under the pier, pick the enclosure lock and open the grinding chamber, all they should get is a face full of ground fish guts. Then they got to swim back to shore with chum on their face to prevent getting caught and arrested. The sharks will love that gesture.

If someone goes to that extent for self torture on the grinder, then +1 for natural selection!

This would be the best scenario. Selling the blocks would help pay for the actual use of the grinder.

We spoke to Blankenship about this, and he said he'd remind his officers to use common sense discretion while in the field. The rule above should only apply to boats, not land/piers.

The best solution is to keep a measuring tape, and photograph your catch with a paper showing the date. Then if they check your fillet, you can show them the photo of the full fish. It has been suggested that this is acceptable--especially if you use timestamps settings. That sounds like an advanced Fin feature though. I don't know much about photography.

I hear ya VG, the problem is that Dawg can’t work 24/7 and people will fish 24/7 during the warm weather. I’m talking about temporary peak period folks that cycle in and out.
I’m not trying to rain on our parade, but when you are dealing with a bureaucracy, nothing is as it appears and becomes tainted by all the big egos involved.
If “The Powers That Be” don’t act quickly, our pier is going to be a smelly, rotten tourist deterrent.

Sorry, but I cant see grinders on the pier being a good thing in any way. Im not sure that much chum in the water would be good for the swimmers. And, could you imagine the liability the pier is carrying? One person gets injured (and they will), the pier gets shut down.

I like Fin's point about removal of fish fillets only. If you think about it, with the state having those signs on the pier, they are encouraging people to discard fish. So, when some one walks off the pier with filets only, and gets stopped by Boys in Blue -and ticketed. Couldnt the state get sued for entrapment?

While on the pier they are telling us to throw them in the trash cans, while off the pier they are telling us to keep them whole.

This seems like such an easy thing to address and fix. State, just make a decision and stick to it.

I think taking the fish grinder idea to the commissioners is just going to make things worst, considering it is pretty much dead on arrival. I think taking something that has ALREAdY been proposed would be a better idea.

Discretion = “the freedom or authority to judge something or make a decision about it” – not much to hang your hat on is it?
Common Sense = “sound practical judgment that is independent of specialized knowledge, training, or the like; normal native intelligence.” - not much to hang your hat on is it?
There are as many versions of Dicretion and Common Sense as there are people.
As for measuring and taking pictures of all your catch and then trying to show them to an officer in bright sun light in a hot azz parking lot is just unrealistic. I don’t see that happening.
I’m not worried about all this BS for me, I can take ‘em home to clean. Our out of town friends and the pier staff are the people feeling the pain!

Isn't there a burden of proof issue here? Doesn't the state have to prove the fish are illegal instead of me having to prove they are legal? If not, then there is no difference between them checking my cooler in the parking lot or the refrigerator in the condo or my freezer at home.

If it is a violation of the law to clean fish on the pier because it is "on the water" then they need to ticket the STATE for putting the cleaning stations there to begin with. Since they did, then it seems to me to be a moot point. If they want to press the issue, put some of the video cameras they are so fond of over the cleaning stations. Lord knows they have them everywhere else in the world.

In my opinion, for whatever it is worth. Probably not much. :)

They consider "landing" as coming to shore.

The state was considering moving the fish cleaning station to land (or the parking lot).
It's no telling now if the issue will be TRUELY resolved in the best interest of the fishermen, walkers and employees of the pier.

That's the honest truth. Punched a chipper on a cross tie mill (unquestionably the most dangerous job I've ever been around) for a couple of summers and nearly got eaten couple times even while following all safety regs. Saw some people do some REALLY stupid things to get hurt badly. :poke1:
That said, count me among the ranks of those who hope for an outbreak of sanity. :horse:

[/quote]looks like this is definitely a win/win/win situation. Angler doesn't have to carry the catch home to clean/no mess in the water around tge pier or beach/extra income generated for the pier.

I submitted a post asking for opinions on filet knives. Someone suggested that I search the archives, I did, and came across this post. Dang, I read on and on like a novel or TV mini-series saga, then it stopped.

What happened at the meeting, what was the outcome? What is the current day process for cleaning pier caught fish?
