Thread: Ghost Shrimp Slurp Gun Upgrades?

Do any of you ghost shrimp slurpers have any suggestions for modifications to make your slurp guns more efficient or easier to use? I made one but haven't had a chance to use it yet. It's just the basic 2" x 2' pvc with test plug attached to 3/4" pvc plunger. Would drilling holes near the top of the barrel for ventilation make any difference? Any tips would be appreciated!

I’m assuming you’ve got a 90 degree on the end of the body tube and a 90 on the plunger handle top right?
If not,...adding those will make it handle a lot better. Other than that, just playing with the expansion tightness till you get a good slurp without binding is about all there is. I’ve never had any issue with the air not evacuating out the top but my plunger shaft is fairly loose in the body. I prefer a fairly tight expansion plug because my method is to slurp and quickly exhaust it into a small net that I keep tied to my belt. It’s right near surf level. If you do it quick it works and the net drops the sand.

Some kind of 90 degree joint with a short 'handle' attached around the outer tube would allow better control of motion for drawing the plunger up with the other arm...


The problem with 'ventilation holes' in the tube is when you get water and/or sand on top of the plunger, that discharge may be directed back at the operator. It would be best to let it vent out of the handle off to one side ...

One I made , hope to be able to use it one day soon , I like the idea of the second handle for a push pull type action ....2 hand operation

I have noticed with mine that if you pull the plunger past the lower horizontal piece it allows air into the barrel and the sand comes out too fast, but if you cap the piece the back pressure resists the plunger pull.

I'm going to "fiddle" with mine (drill holes) to get a higher pressure relief point that will always be above the plunger.

That makes sense that it does that so yea, that would be a problem. Getting past the horizontal vent would act as a relief valve and you lose a lot of the suspended material real fast. The pictures of the other guy’s versions posted here show a very short section up there and that prevents the plunger from going past the lower handle. Your’s sounds like it has a longer section there. Hmmm....
...You could alter the length of the shaft so it can’t draw the plunger up that high, or put a fitting on it as a “stop”

Mine has 27in of stroke and stops at the bottom of the tee piece , with the tee handle (secondary handle) as the air exhaust, hope to use it one day
Also has a stop to prevent the suction piece ever leaving the main tube , but close enough to the bottom to adjust the tension wing nut

The first one I made is 2 ft. long. Is that going to be too short? Saw a guy on Youtube make one 3 feet long, however he is 6'4" tall. I am 5'9''. I guess if it is too short, I can just add some length to the barrel with a coupling. Also saw some made with ABS instead of PVC, I assume it would be a little lighter, cheaper? And one more question.....Do you try and keep ghost shrimp alive or just put them on ice for fresh dead?

We've done both. Put a couple of inches of sand in the bottom of your aerated bucket to keep them live. I can't say live is better bait, hooking them kills them.

I'm 5-9 now (shrinking) but mine seems to be ok , my lower back doesn't like bending over too much anymore ..... after the first slurp I think you'll be going deeper anyway for up to 3 slurps
