In the freshwater realm, I don't "keep" certain fish. Some, I'll even toss up on the bank intentionally.
Carp, drum, asian carp, gar.
I have been absent from the salt water scene for many years. Honestly i was just a boy fishing with my dad along south padre in Texas.
Can someone kindly list a few types (if any) catchable around the pier that are not considered fit or safe for discerning tastes?

I fished port isabell,lower laguna madre as a kid too,,spoiled me bad,,bomber sticks and Johnson sprites,,,long time ago in th early 60's
I personally wouldn't eat Ladyfish, catfish, remora, bluefish or king mackerel. Some of the locals like bluefish and LOVE king mackerel and a few eat the others. I prefer pompano, flounder, speckled trout, sheepshead, redfish, or black drum. Spanish is great if you eat it fresh. I don't have a foodsaver any more so It could be kept frozen well if you had one.
What chillinfish said, although personally ill eat king. On what else not to eat - hardtails, pretty much all baitfish, big black drums - almost always full of worms, jack crevalle and bull reds usually have tough meat or sometimes worms but they are alright (smaller ones are better).

Don't eat sharksuckers (remoras), black drum/crevalle jack/king mackerel over 30 inches, any saltwater catfish, blue runners (hardtails), atlantic bumpers (crazyfish), or pinfish.
The rest can pretty much be eaten with proper preparation, other than those you simply know you can't eat like a poisonous puffer.
I have recipes for pretty much anything you catch. So catch it and then ask me. I'll hook you up. No need to gather a recipe.until you acquire it first though.

I have a Traeger grill (the smallest one) used applewood and cooked it at 350 for about 10 minutes on each side. I coated the fish with olive oil then just salt and pepper. Before I flip fish I baste with butter w/garlic and then baste the other side when I flip it. Yummy! I cooked a little spansish Mack my son caught but just about 5 minutes each side.Quote:

We also used to throw drum, gar, shad, etc. on the bank. Then learned how important their eggs and fry were to the overall ecosystem. No such thing as trash in nature, it is a Man thing.

Yea I like them too. Not as fine as Crappie or flathead, but still a good eating fish. Not a lot of folks target them but they are pretty fun to catch due to numbers and size!
How do you clean a freshwater drum. Filet or what?
Yes I filet them. An I put them on ice as soon as I catch them...
About the only fish I have tried that was basically inedible has been pinfish and large black drum. Pinfish taste like iodine and big black drum have a lot of connective tissue between the muscle fibers, nasty gelatinous stuff when cooked.
Jack crevalle are good, have a texture like pork. I made curry with it.
Even hardtails are edible, but you have to cut out the redmeat.
I have not tried ladyfish, but I hear they make good fish patties.

I eat drum regularly and most people tell me they like my fried drum filets as well as crappie. I had never eaten gar until a trip to south Louisiana where I was introduced to gar burger patties and loved them. An elderly german lady in my neighborhood used to fix a baked carp dish that I tried and liked. I have never met an Asian carp. Look at the recipe section on this web site for helpful ideas.
I eat smaller black drum, or as I like to call "little uglies". Just old bay seasoning and put them on the grill. Blackened drum is good. I stay away from the big black drum.

I don't think it's PETA people. Nothing more than a troll and a couple of his friends or one guy routing through a proxy server. My son was doing that when he was in Jr High. Of course he's a computer science major at Ole Miss now, so I guess that's not a surprise. I don't think banning IP addressees is very useful from what I understand as they can be changed easily. Putting a cookie on his computer and banning its identity is more effective so I've been led to believe.
i don't think it's a coincidence that it has been happening one after the other recently.

Personally, I think a nominal fee of $5 a year would be altogether appropriate. Anyone unwilling to come up wth that has no appreciation for the value of the info shared on a daily basis. I think it would also deter most trolls. jm2cw
ETA some perspective: about a pack of smokes, can and a half of snuff, couple of beers, #1 at McDs, couple weeks of loose change that gets thrown in the jar vs tips, tactics and techniqes from some of the most knowledgable anglers for many, many miles as well as -many times- real time reports of fishing action on a forum that is pretty much - usually - hassle free.
