I was watching a TV show last night which featured Dauphin Island, and I thought to myself what a great place it looks for surf fishing.
Does anyone have any experience fishing there? Are there any hot spots? What are the most productive methods?
I will be in the area in Mid April, what species should I target at that time of year?
If anyone is interested the TV show was called Buy the Beach!!
Yeah, the episode was called "Island of Seclusion".
My wife watches HGTV a LOT so we've seen that ;-)
Pretty cool seeing on TV an area you've grown up knowing.
Another program "Beachfront Bargain Hunt" 1st episode was on Dauphin Island.
Dauphin Island features 3 major fishing locations:
the 'free' pier and jetties on the East End (east and south of Fort Gaines),
the 'spit' which was formerly Pelican Island out from where the pine trees stop near the old Dauphin Island Pier,
and the 'West End Beach' at the western end of Bienville Blvd.
A fourth spot is to wade fish the 'lagoon' in front of the Dauphin Island Golf Course.
April is usually a good month as from shore fishing is usually peaking then with speckled trout, redfish, flounder, sheepshead, etc.
Wadefishing with lures is often productive, but live bait (shrimp or minnows) is 'tops' most of the time.

There was nothing on TV last night, and stumbled across it. Was nice to see Gulf Shores seeing that we haven't been before and we were both impressed, looks beautiful.
Back to the fishing, I havent done a great amount of lure fishing, but will give it a try. A member on here recommended 'paddletails', so will give them ago.
Will probably spend a day on Dauphin island and move from spot to spot, hopefully catching a few nice reds.
Are there any bait shops on th island?

Now you have discovered it Gulf Shores /Orange Beach/ Dauphin Island are not as well known as some other places but are little known gems that are as picturest as any place in the world with crystal clear water and bright sandy beaches plus excellent fishing plus not being as crowded an expensive You'll enjoy your visit You are coming at prime fishing time and have excellent advice from Pier#er on Dauphin Island You might also want to try the Gulf Shores Pier we all fish on You'll fine excellent comradery plus fishing should be great that time of the year We all will be glad to help you enjoy the experience I dare say it might be one you'll never forget if the fishing is anything like it should be that time of the year
Dude, do you have pictures of that island. You are correct, Dauphin Island is not as well known as some other places. I've become very excited to check out that island. Thanks for reminding.Quote:

Thanks Dan, I am sure I will spend a few hours on the pier.
I have not had a great amount of luck pier fishing, although did catch an half decent Grey Snapper off one of the piers at Fort Desoto in Florida.
I have got 7 days staying near the Little Lagoon and hope to fish every day, my girlfriend is very easy going and providing she has a comfortable chair and the sun above she is happy going fishing with me.
