A buddy of mine and our brides of 50+ years plan to spend Jan. & Feb. in GS. My question to you ol' Wish Fish Gods, should we have a cast net, if so how big? Should we have a pier gaff or a net, if so how long? Being that it's the Winter months, we don't plan or catching many big fish, but maybe! How about waders & a fly rod? Any advise from you people will be greatly appreciated.
I'm not sure if you'll have a boat or not but I can say a little about flyfishing. Have a 9wt or so and look for the bull reds off the beach. They are aweome on a flyrod.
Don't even ask about fly patterns...if you find them, generally, they'll hit an old sock. If you don't have access to a boat, you can walk the beach (or wade out waist deep with waders) and wait to intercept one. Of course, you odds are much better with a boat.
That's probably the most fun you can have with a flyrod that time of year.
No need for a cast net or gaff that time of year but a drop net with 30' feet of rope will be needed for sheepshead. No on the fly rod but yes on the waders if you want to catch ghost shrimp.
Can a person catch ghost shrimp at that time of the year? Thanks for the info.
I have a boat, but I don't want to haul it down from MN. I have a 8# that I have used on 25# salmon, that should do the job. Thanks for the info.
