    braid backing suggestion?

i recently purchased a slammer 560 for my new king reel im going to do as suggest in another post and put 300yds of 20#braid as backing with 16# illusion on top. i have never really used any braid before, mainly i stick to mono so any suggestion from the masses appreciated.

The braid will not come into use unless you have a big fish on, so it is just for reel yardage. And for as 20 lb test braid, you could have used 15 lb test braid and gotten even more yardage. Some people can get away with 10 and 12 lb line, but i like 16lb hi vis diamond. I can see it better.

yes unless you have a 15 lb fish or larger, go for line capasity, you never know when you might need it. Last week I hooked up on two different sharks that took out over 350 yards of line, I could only turn one of them. Put the braid on the bottom.

    Re: braid backing suggestion?

Usually if your going to back it with braid you would do like 150 yds of 20-30# braid and fill the rest with mono of your choice. The main thing is just to get to that 300+ mark. You can do that several ways. You'd be just putting a top shot on if you did 300 yds of braid and a mono to fill it. Its cheaper to just do the backing and mono but that's all up to you.

For braid, I HIGHLY recommend Power Pro Super Slick 8 HiVis Yellow. I use 10# PP myself, since it has plenty of strength and only the size of 2#test... tons of capacity. Also, Super Slick 8 is smooth, and won't cut other anglers' mono lines once the fish has pulled out your top shot.

    Re: braid backing suggestion?

After consulting with John G, we rigged my new Slammer 560L with 300 yards of 20# PowerPro backing and 130 yards of 16# Berkley ProSpec. John had just got a sample spool from Berkley and let me have the top shot for free. I guess he knew I would put it through hell and report to him what I thought of it as well as appreciate a freebie. It is darn good line and the only issue I had with it was the color. The sample he gave me was blue and I couldn't see it against the water well. I would use it again in florescent yellow if he decided to stock it and it was cheaper than Momoi Hi-Catch. Which I replaced the ProSpec, with in their version of florescent yellow.

As far as Momoi Illusion as the top shot I personally feel it is unnecessary for kings, Hi-Catch is plenty good enough unless you are plagued by getting "burned off" by others or can't seem to keep your fish out of the pilings. If I was restricted to only being able to fish when the pier is crowded I might opt for Illusion for its additional abrasion resistance.
