the biggest off the old pier that comes with photographic evidence is Mr. Brantley's 52#r

With all do respect to memories of everyone involved... This is the story that has been told for many years by Mr. Pierce, Mr. Dotson, and recorded in Mrs. Dotson's memoirs of pier days. (Short version)
Mr. Brantley along with his son who was about five years old, went to the pier some time in late summer. It was their first time fishing on the pier. They were fishing with red worms straight down off the side of the pier. John Pierce, who was a pier regular (God rest his soul), helped them get set up to fish for kings. He let them catch an alewife and they fished it nearly straight down off the side of the pier. Well, they caught a big king. According to John Pierce, who, I know, gaffed the fish, it weighed 49 pounds. It almost was a pier record, but it fell just short. Dennis Rice and John Pierce are tied for the record king off the old pier, each having caught 50 lb. king mackerel. There never was a 52 lb. king caught off the old pier. Just like with each old fish tale the 49 pounder has just grown over time, with each retelling of the story.
The fish was caught may 5 of 1991. It was my first day on the pier. John pierce did gaff the fish. Talking to Stephen two years ago at J and M he said he remembers the day te fish was caught because Mr. Pierce called him that evening and told him about the fish that he had gaffed that day, saying that it was indeed larger than his. The fish weighed 52 lbs the day he caught it and has grown nor shrunk.
If I knew there was ever going to be this kind of disagreement every time this subject was brought up because a regular didnt catch it, I wish he would have never caught it. I get tired of having to defend the validity of this fish every year. Who honestly cares who caught the biggest. Pier fishing was supposed to be about friends first and fishing second. Over the past two years I have seen the friendships disappear over a damn fish. For this very reason is why I will not be frequebting the pier as much this summer. It has lost it's family friendly atmosphere and I will not take my sons fishing where I have to worry about someone being rude to them over a fish.
I WAS THERE THE DAY JOHN PIERCE CAUGHT A 50+ POUND KING...AS FAR AS I EVER KNEW THAT WAS THE PIER RECORD...I SPENT YEARS TRYING TO BREAK IT...
I just got off the phone with Steven he said there was no such conversation that took place anywhere especially at J and M Tackle. He did say you had mentioned this to him in the past and he always responded with, "I always thought My Pop had the record of 50#, I am unaware of a king being caught that was bigger."
Steven (John Pierce's grandson) will be posting later tonight when he gets off work.
Guess il have to end all this bickering and bust a 50+ this year...
I don't understand why it always has to resort to a pissing contest. It really doesn't matter who caught the bigger fish, if you know what is really important. Until their is an official record book with all the fish weighed on the same certified scale, it really doesn't matter. The only fish that truly holds water on the pier is Tricia Cluck's pompano. Like I said before, pier fishing I supposed to be about the friendships first, and fishing second. This whole mine is bigger and better attitude is exactly what is pushing me away from the place I love. In the end, people will believe what they want to believe. The fish is long gone and all that remains are the stories and the picture of a man and his young son who was on his first trip ever to the pier.
Somebody shoot this dead :horse:

No doubt. What's the point in stirring a pot of s*** other than to see how bad you can make it smell.
This whole thread needs to be deleted.
Well im gonna say this before it does. Lisa I find it very hard to believe that a man that holds a Royal billfish slam would walk out on the pier and fish with earthworms. Seems to me that your story is the one that has grown
JMHO
I see no need to kill it, just like any question, different people have different answers.. A legit question was asked.. And to be honest, one of the things that draws me to the pier is the competition
Like I said, the world will never know. This is all I have to say Mr.B,JP and DR all caught fish that were in a class of there own and are the only members of the 50lb club that I know of. The scales we used back then were the Hanson cotton scales which vary several pounds from day to day.I knew this Sh!&@T was going to get cranked up the minute I first saw this thread this morning.THE END NOW LET IT BE!!!!
I always viewed John Pierce as the authority on king mackerel on the old pier and he always said the fish in question was 49 pounds. Dennis Rice and John himself caught 50 pounders, which I always took to be the pier records.
Guys I have fished the piers for 41 years the largest fish that I know of is the 50# fish caught by Mr. Pierce and he did not mind reminding every one he had the record. I enjoyed sharing the rail with he and Mr. John Dotson.
Jeb we have different stories about the king. It is not worth losing a family/friendship over. Sometimes you have to agree to disagree. As far as your children go I don't think anyone would be rude to them, especially around me, remember the gatorade episode. John J. your right, I am very blessed to have fished with a group that have achieved the 50# king club.

After reading this thread and Baitgirl's other posts, let me add an, "Oh. I see." As usual, Mr. John has things summed up very succinctly. I was there the day Gainer caught the big one. A contest of some kind was going on and he wanted lots of witnesses. Maybe the contests and tournaments were distracting?
Peaches, you or one of the other regulars will probably catch a 55#r some lucky day. Heck, I think I popped one off that big last year. ;)
My final post on this topic...
I love and cherish every one of my crazy GSP fishing friends (old and new). Does anyone need me to catch them a bait? Yes, I do remember my place on the pier.(lol) Now lets shutup and fish... Love yall bunches!
Hugs,
Baitgirl

BTW, the picture of this king head weighed 12#

As far as the eye can see, this is THE largest king head EVER landed on the new (or old) pier. :D
Not that it was weighed on a certified scale mind you, but a 41 year old Kmart special with custom corrosion ???
Recollect I was wing wrestlin Sam :slap: (not THE Sam, or Sammy but Sam XXIII) :violent
for the last bite of a day old peanut butter sammich left on the rail :puke:
when the biggest king anybody ever saw (on the new GSPPier, old GSPPier or any freakin pier
grabbed my bait next to the 4th piling on the west side of the third octi @ 8:42 am on the 15th of June in the YOOL 2013 ... :headbang:
Peaches tried to snake it from me, but BIG kings don't eat dead baits without jelly on them, so it ate my livie instead. :moon:
... It's THE HAT ;-)
Or maybe the LY that Baitgirl gave me, IF she EVER gave me a bait... :P
Well folks, this king (the biggest EVER hooked anywhere) almost strips my Penn 706 and I'm groovin on the +250 yard run 8)
and 'stylin' the rod bend for the tourists who are gathering around to take pictures, get autographs and generally oohing and ahhhing at my obvious fishing prowess
But the locals are dissin on me cuz I'm from Mobile and wear a dumb hat so I don't die of skin cancer, and my ole green reel with the broke bail needs 'oralin' ::)
I mean salt_water_guy won't spread me no shade or nuthin :3some:
Nevermind that I had been killin kings out here since before Pierboy was a glimmer in his daddy's eye :-*
and not gettin no R-E-S-P-E-C-T jus like OPP :horse:
Anyway, even Sam couldn't have choked this king down in less than 127 bites. :eat:
Rich1 would have to drive to Key West to hook a king this big!
and John G would've wrapped 301 king leaders just to look at this fish! :poke1:
Fin might have hooked it IF he could've gotten out of bed before noon :spank:
And Bubba was no where to be found, but I have witnesses. LOTS of witnesses :-X
Dublethreat would be a triple crown winner, IF he had hooked this king ;D
And poor Lugnut would probably sell his computer after asking this... :wall:
...But in the end it was just breakfast for a shark :shark
:boohoo: :'(
So drop the crap and go :fishing: :ring
