:o
:yippee:
Nice fish and cute puppy too.
:headbang: Nice freaking fish! :headbang:
With the limited access to Ono, there's no telling what kind of monsters are lurking below.
That's one fine catch.
Did he catch it from a boat or dock at Ono?
I would be interested in a tissue sample from fat kings in that area. I have a theory that kings and other predators smart enough to harvest the species of those areas will not have as high of mercury levels as predators which stay at or beyond the coast--especially with the warmer winters we've had in recent years.
If my theory is correct, that king (if it returned to that area year after year) might have similar mercury levels to, let's say, a 20# king due to its choice of diet in that location.
Then again, he might have wandered in there during the recent storm and found treasure food and decided not to leave. Either way, just a hunch.
Tell your bud congrats on his fish.
Ono?
no, he got it on his way back from snapper fishing yesterday
VG,I would like a tissue sample from your little brain.Who in their right mind would even consider that fish being caught in 'Ole River ...........??????
HAHA i about sprayed tea out my nose on that one :D
VG will you make me a sandwich
The Guy Lives on ono not the Fish :yay: :poke1:

Lol, now that we've all had our little laugh at my expense...
The poster said "Ono," which i would assume to be Ono Island connecting to the pass.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ono_Island_(Alabama)
Since i have caught kings in the pass and in some areas beyond, i find it plausible they could be caught elsewhere--especially having just been dredged. I haven't personally gotten to fish Ono island due to limited private access, so was hoping he might have caught it near there; but he got it on a boat while snapper fishing, so the theory still can't be tested yet anyhow.
I'm not familiar with "Ole River" that you mentioned unless that is a local term for something else--I'm guessing that's referring to the small stretch of salt water south of the island? I assumed that entire area would be called Bayou st John with Ono just being an island.
Besides, you'd be surprised at how far some species will travel out of their "comfort zone."
I catch Big kings in the fall in pcola bay they even have a torment called king of the bay i wish someday i can catch a 50+lb king :headbang: Thats a nice fish!
My bad, should have looked at the pic better. That dock is on the bay side of Ono.
VG - He said his buddy was "from" Ono, not on Ono. LOL. How would he have landed that fish with that channel marker so close to him anyway?

He also said he used his bathroom scale to measure the weight. I still assumed it was off a boat either way. Ive seen stranger things happen though. You wouldn't believe some of the places I've found tarpon hiding over the years.

Unless you tell me you found tarpon in a Georgia trout stream or a catfish pond in Mississippi, I could envision them in plenty of places. Tarpon and mackerel aren't the same. Besides everyone knows that wahoo and marlin keep kings out of the bays.

Yeah, mackerel can't handle the lower oxygen levels.
Speaking of, we actually own preserved jarred tarpon lungs my wife collected years ago when cleaning rodeo catches working with gary nelson. They are now "decorative" book ends. ::) She also created an interesting tarpon scale wind chime.
Extraordinary creatures, tarpon are.
Meanwhile, all these large kings, it wouldn't be surprising if the state record got trampled again this year.

Now thats funny. I don't care who you are. ;D
Nice fish !
I saw at least a 20+pound King sky north of the Al point bridge, between the 1st sandy island and the mouth to Old River several years ago.

I'd like to see a pic of those bookends.
\I didn't know this but here is some info on the Lungs of a tarpon. (Megalops is another name for tarpon)
One of the unique features of Megalops is the function of the swim bladder as a pseudo-respiratory organ. These gas structures can be used for buoyancy, as an accessory respiratory organ, or both. In Megalops, it is an unpaired air holding structure that arises dorsally from the posterior pharynx. Megalops uses the swim bladder as a respiratory organ and the respiratory surface is coated with blood capillaries with a thin epithelium overtop. This is the basis of the alveolar tissue that is found in the swim bladder and is believed to be one of the primary methods by which Megalops “breathe”. Megalops are obligate air breathers, and if they are not allowed to access the surface they will die. The exchange of gas that occurs is done at the surface through a rolling motion that is commonly associated with Megalops sightings.
