It should be a rule on the Gulf State pier that children should not be allowed to be on the pier without any shoes. Their parents do not have sense enough to make them plus I really get tired of their moaning and groaning about hooks, fish scraps, etc. I believe everyone should clean up after themselves and never leave any hooks, stray fishing line, wire leaders and fish lying around without being in a cooler, etc. It is also very dangerous for these same parents to allow their children to run on the pier, especially towards the rail when someone has a fish on or decks a fish or are standing right behind us (across the red line) as we are casting our rods. I'm sure this has been covered before, but it is really getting out of hand.

I'd have to dis-agree about making it a rule. We've got enough rules/regs in this world already. You can't hand feed these people their whole lives. If we'd make a rule for every thing that should be common sense, we'd be in trouble. Another thing is the foot traffic the pier gets from tourists just walking the beach, it wouldn't be a smart move from a business standpoint. They should know to wear shoes on a hot ass pier mid day, if not, you can bet your ass after getting hooked or burned up feet their next visit they might bring them a pair.

I don't know how many times I've stubbed my toe or got fishing line wrapped around it, what if they made it a rule to wear closed toe shoes???? I wouldn't be seen at the pier again!

Anyways, my point being in everyday life we've told what we can and can't do enough.

I agree with png, don’t need more rules for people to ignore. Always warn people with kids that they should watch out for hooks on the deck, but adults without kids are on their own if they ain’t got sense enough to wear shoes.

The lessons I learned best were those that hurt like hell. Hooks are sharp. Sand burs hurt. Poison ivy is miserable. Hot pizza cheese will burn the (**^ out of your mouth. Kings and Spanish have sharp teeth. And so on and on and on. Half our problems now come from trying to live our kids lives for them. Cripes, when I was little I got kicked out of the house on Saturday after breakfast and was told to be home when the street lights came on. Dad's typical response to coming home bloody and squalling: I told you not to try that. Go wash it off and don't bleed on the floor.

Yeah kings teeth are sharp. That's an understatement.

I have to agree with PNG on this, if you can't figure out hooks may get over looked in an area where people fish and there is a possibility you may end up with one in your foot, well some lessons are better learned.

I agree also. We have plenty enough rules (that aren't even enforced) on and off the pier. I've only been on the pier for a few weeks, but I've seen people communicating respectfully with less enlightened fishermen with excellent results. A kind word of advice will usually do the trick.

I think if kids are doing something that is going kill or mane them you need to stop them and instill some wisdom in them. If it is only going to hurt them a little, tell them once. If they don't listen let pain take over. Pain is a language youngsters understand better than adult spoken warnings and rules.
