Hey guys. Got some questions for y'all. Baitcasting or spinning reel for pier and surf for my bigger rods. I have some of the original Abu 7500C3 and a new Diawa Lexa 400 that I use on my surf/dam rods ranging from 11-14ft. If it'll work I only plan on bringing my 11ft Lamglass. Do you all think I need to go buy a spinning reel/combo for fishing the pier and or surf? And is the locals going to be ok with an 11ft Rod on the pier?? Thanks for the help!!!

8-9ft rods are all you need and sometimes not even that long.....I use to fish with a 7ft all the time but have picked up a few longer lately
Spinning is better for casting a very light bait (a cigar minnow or live LY is only a couple of ounces and delicate) and has better line capacity for the 15# mono most experienced folks spool. Letting the king run and wear itself out may take 300 yards.
That what I was afraid of. Glad I asked. So what is a decent rod I could get for the 8-9 ft spinning setup? I definetly don't need another $250 rod
Big water ugly stik......8ft, won't break the bank, or a custom 8ft shelf rod from J&M tackle once you get down there for a little more
Penn Fierce combos are less than $100
Battle II just over $100
After each trip down I start to prepare for the next, with tackle and gear......I learn every trip......I do have way too much and only fish one rod at a time, but hve a few pre rigged for other fish passing by, or when the bite is on, not having to retie.....just grab a rod rigged and keep catching:D......most fresh water rods doublefor the salt, just need to take extra care each day rinsing and after the trip is over.......especially fishing the beach with fine sand
For economics and those that don't get to fish that much to me you can't beat a Penn Pursuit II combo $56 at Walmart ,Academy Sport ,online' etc with 250-275 yds of 10lb mono It is excellent for bubble rigs, gotcha's and other artificials for spanish and blues, can be used with a carolina rig , Drop rig etc in surf or on pier I have several of them as well as Penn Fierce and Battle IIs While I have caught Kings on them if you want to target them or Reds I'd go a little larger like the Penn Battle II but the Pursuit II will catch about anything you'll run into
I encourage anybody with tackle concerns to pay a visit to J&M Tackle in Orange Beach. They have rigs there to fit just about any pocketbook or fishing need, along with experienced and knowledgeable sales staff. I'm pretty sure they have the Penn combos previously mentioned, too. They are helpful and friendly.
Ok guys here a good question for ya. Will be taking my Wife's ford escape to the beach, gets alot better gas than my truck. How the heck do you guys transport your rods?!?!
If you plan on fishing with live bait, casting distance is not that big of an issue. Either one of your reels mentioned have the capacity to get the job done. If you are comfortable with a conventional/baitcaster, then use one on an appropriate sized rod (MH 6.5 - 8').
However, you will be somewhat on your own figuring out any nuances that are different from spinning reels. This is simply because you will most likely be the only one doing it that way... Here. Go to different places and you'll find spinning gear to be an oddball's choice of tackle.
The Duke. That's an issue I'm dealing with. Here is what I'm doing: go buy you a couple of those swimming pool noodles with the hole down the center. Take you pocket knife and cut it down the center only half of the diameter just so you can access the center. Put this over your rod with the eyes down away from the slice and press the rod into the noodle. The eyes will dig into the foam noodle and not allow the rod to slide out. Tape several straps of trusty ol duck tape a lot the slice to secure it closed. You can now strap it on top of your wife's car and its protected from kids and being broken during travel Call it redneck call it what you want but it works for me.

The way I transport min which are 2 - 12 ft.,1- 8 ft. and 2- 6 ft. rods is by taking all the reels off and store separately, load all my suitcases, chairs, bags and tackle boxes in the back of my Pilot then put beach towels over that and place my rods which I tie all together using 3 very small trash can liners. The longer poles come in between the front seats. Also I place another towel over them. I'm sure there are better ways. Oh yeah I also tied them to my roof rail before and worked great, but when I stayed overnight at a hotel I took them off and to the room.
I looked at the Pursuit II 6000-8' rod combo. The reel would suffice for kings if loaded with 20lb braid and a mono top shot. The rod was as stiff as a broom handle. Perfect for flipping a jig in thick milfoil but too stiff for casting a dead cigar minnow or ly without slinging it off.
:congratulatory:Depending on how long the rods are and how much room you have inside will dictate where you put them. I travel and place my rods in an explorer. I use 1/2" PVC covered with foam pipe insulation and hang the pipes from the Front and rear coat hooks. They stay above your head and you can store the rods when traveling back and forth to the pier. The foam keeps the rods protected and from sliding around. I use the pipe insulation because it is already split to go over the pipe and is a smaller diameter than the noodles for use inside. Just be cautious about any hooks or lures that might hang down if you leave them tied up. Works for me! You should be able to draw from all these suggestions and come up with what works best for you.

+1 on the rod tube......it travels inside the full size van and on the roof rack when we have made the trip in the explorer.....fits my 9ft rods, when I added an extra holeQuote:

another thought, you could put handles on the tube to make carrying easier.
