About Red Snapper Mismanagement

There has been much discussion about the abbreviated Red Snapper Season of 2012. Red Sapper are over protected in the minds of most if not all recreational fishermen along theGulfCoast.

Although I am a boat-less fisherman, I have friends and acquaintances who fish the Gulf by boat on a regular basis and many folks do their Gulf fishing with the great local charter boats and captains who make their home and livelihood on theAlabamaGulfCoast.

According to those who actually go out in the Gulf and fish for species other than Red Snapper (due to limits and short season) are constantly complaining that the Red Snapper are pigs and don’t seem to share the hooks with their reef/bottom dwelling counterparts. They all say that it is really tuff to catch anything else.

Boaters who prefer trolling only occasionally have this problem. It seems funny to say that catching a lot of Red Snapper is a problem, but if your thing is bottom fishing, the Snapper may have you questioning the legitimacy of their birth.

My assessment of the situation is based solely on conversations with people who actually fish in the Gulf.
